You'll probably be fine.
The demo is a good recommendation from Gold since despite what I say I totally underestimate what bugs people with regards to "horror" or "scare" since I'm immune to those factors.
The focus is on the gameplay, primarily though, and the demo will give you a good indication of the core gameplay immediately without it changing too much beyond that. If you like it you are sold. If not then it wont get much better.
If you do end up liking this RE5 is much the same while RE6 is kind of an arcadey action game and extremely hit/miss on if you like it as a very volatile public opinion about the game (leaning towards the negative for most core fans, though, but I advise to judge it yourself if you end up even getting that far in the series).
RE 2 & 3 are fairly action oriented compared to older RE games, too, similar to this one however one point to consider is if the stalker element bothers you as both games feature a large stalking type monster coming after you at some segments. It is very short in RE2 but is enough to bother people who don't handle that well (even though the monster cannot outpace your walk speed so can't actually catch you just loud audio to make it seem imposing lol). RE3 it is a somewhat core feature though.
As long as you have nice guns and kick ass.. horror isn't really horror, at least for me.
Resident Evil 4 only has 2 almost scary, slightly tense sections. And these are mostly at the end and super short. So no big deal.
I was backing away from a chainsaw guy, stepped on a trap and then got held from behind by two villagers that came out of nowhere. Then I got gutted very violently, so that would be the gore. It was the perfect screw up on my part but the death scene played out perfect.
Love the setting of the game with the village, castle and cult. It's really not scary but it does give you the feeling that this place, isn't a good place.
There is a part that you play as the girl which can be spooky.
I play the game and I can't play horror games (I have a VERY sensitive gut in the most literal sense). The game (even this darker, edgier remake of the original) is more action-based than horror based and the amount of jump-scares are VERY limited and not overdone. Horror is more the description of the overall atmosphere in this game - don't play RE 7 tho ;-)

RE2 startled me more going down a hallway, passing windows and going around a corner. More so than the whole game of RE4.
So you should be fine even if you don't like horror games.
Just don't shoot everything you see and whine about the lack of ammo on Hardcore/Pro.
Yeah, that game could be really scary sometimes - it's also really nervewrecking for more ... scare-inclined people like me when a big looming threat follows you around the entire game. That sure wasn't good for my psyche.
Ahhh I love RE2 ^^
If this was a Ninja Turtle game, I doubt it would be as interesting. Having a guy and girl trying to survive holds more value.
