Why wouldn't they send in a special forces team?
Instead of one dude? once the church is located, send in delta or the SEALs or something and use a strike unit to take this cult on, instead of one lone operative?

Well, for the same reason that a town in Spain in 2005 was stuck in the time of 1910 or because they sent the two worst agents of the Cuerpo Nacional de Policia together with an American agent.

Because it's fiction.

Because it's Resident Evil and not Call of Duty.

For the sake of your own sanity: Never ever ask for logic or common sense in a Resident Evil game.

I don't hate CoD, in fact I liked most of them. And the RE6 Chris campaign is nothing like CoD, it's more like a gimped version of Gears of War.

Because the setting is a foreign nation that the US doesn't have any authority.

it's a video game with an intentionally goofy story

I don't know why people are trying to find realism or logic here

If logic worked in RE then ANYTING past RE2,3 and Veronica would not happen at all.
You would expect that nations would go on full extermanatus concerning any suspicious ♥♥♥♥. but Re5 and Re6 prove you wrong,

Resident Evil is DUMB, in a best way possible, that's the whole point of the franchise. I don't know if it was intentional from the start, but right now it definitely embraces its cheesy roots, while also trying to balance it with more serious tone in newer games. I think its really hard to do, but they've been doing great imo.

Spain is NATO, they would have accepted US Special forces involvement, probably even sent their own

^ This one.

It's actually talked about in the original. It's astonishing how much lore the remake drops or doesn't bother delving into. Basically US knew Ashley's kidnapping was made possibly by an insider, but they don't know who the traitor is, so they're only capable of launching small-scale covert operations.
