Lily Gao facing waves of harassment by angry fans after voicing Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 Remake
This is on GameRant today, even though clickbait video game journalism are full of anti-gamers crap. What's happening is that Lily Gao, the voice actress of Ada Wong from the Resident Evil 4 Remake, is currently facing harassment by angry fans that are probably trolls, causing her to purge her Instagram posts and possibly other social media pages. I'll copy what the article is saying about this.

Resident Evil 4 remake voice actor Lily Gao has deleted Instagram posts after being flooded with negative comments from angry fans. The Resident Evil 4 remake is faithful to the 2005 original in many ways, but it also features some significant departures. One of the big differences between this new version of Resident Evil 4 and the original game is its cast, with basically every role recast for the 2023 version.

Major characters Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong both have different actors doing their performance capture and voice work, with Wong played by Lily Gao this time around. Gao is primarily known for her television work, but she's no stranger to the world of Resident Evil. In fact, Gao played a live action version of Ada Wong in the 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City prior to voicing the character in the Resident Evil 4 remake.

Gao's performance as Ada Wong in the Resident Evil 4 remake has received some criticism, with some fans unhappy with her portrayal. While many have placed the blame more on whoever was directing Gao's performance than Gao herself, others have decided to harass the actress on social media. The wave of harassment was intense enough that Gao deleted most of her Instagram posts, which were flooded with negative comments from disgruntled Resident Evil fans.

Gao taking on the role of Ada Wong in the Resident Evil 4 remake has been a source of controversy long before the game even came out. Fans were initially upset when they discovered Resident Evil 2 remake Ada voice actor Jolene Andersen wouldn't be returning to the role in the Resident Evil 4 remake. It seems this decision was born out of Capcom's desire to avoid hiring union workers for the Resident Evil 4 remake, and also to hire someone who is actually Chinese to play a Chinese-American character. Regardless, even if one doesn't like Gao's performance as Ada Wong in the Resident Evil 4 remake, it is obviously not appropriate to harass her like this, and hopefully this behavior stops.

While unconfirmed, it's possible Gao will have the chance to play the role of Ada in future Resident Evil projects. Leaks have suggested that the Resident Evil 4 remake may be adding Separate Ways, a bonus campaign starring Ada Wong, and one would imagine Gao would be back to play the character again. However, Capcom hasn't actually confirmed if Separate Ways is coming to the Resident Evil 4 remake or not, so fans should keep their expectations in check.

Resident Evil 4 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

It's like the Kelly Marie Tran drama all over again. Criticism is fine, and I do believe Lily Gao could've put more feeling in voicing Ada Wong. But harassing her with hate comments to drive her out from social media, that's just not right, and it gives fans and gamers a bad name for clickbait journalists to point that out to smear gamers and fans as the bad guys.

yup, already a thread about it

The only problem is I don't know if the articles help or hurt. People tend to harass more once they see it gets attention like this. And people who felt passionate about her performance might take the opportunity to join a dogpile.

DIdnt read it all and it's ofc very sad that these apes go to harass a VA. But EVERYONE especially gaming/acting business personalities should know by now that NOBODY should yield to sad trolls. Just ignore them and move on. Don't be weak. Thats what they want.

But nope. The circle continues.. and yet again " gamers inc." are the bad guys again.

This "be strong don't feed the trolls lol" platitude can only work in a world where everyone is on an equal playing field, where everybody starts out with the same set of privileges, which is a materially impossible idealist liberal fiction.
To put it simply; not everyone can afford to be strong and ignore the trolls, and not everyone gets trolled equally. Some people are trolled more than others. The business of trolling is profoundly unfair and trolls often disproportionately target people who belong to certain categories, or who exhibit certain characteristics.
I think it's better to condemn the trolls rather than to have the actress bear the responsibility of having to properly deal with them as you put it. If what the OP said is true, then Gamers inc are the bad guys in this case.

While thats true. I would say that doesnt matter for the trolls. There will always be trolls. But people getting trolled can get stronger. They can change something. Nobody can change the troll masses being butthurt unless we go full social score madness.

It doesn't have to be this way.
Of course it doesn't matter for the trolls, but they should be condemned regardless, even if the person getting trolled can "get stronger" as you say. Condemning the trolls could make them more reluctant to troll others in the future, or could get them to completely stop their trolling, also, let us not forget that a lot of these trolls are usually one imageboard thread away from becoming full-blown fascists, which has real-world rammifications. These trolls don't troll people randomly, they have a motus operandi, they target specific categories of people, and if you were to ask me which came first, the trolling of certain categories of people or the fascist sentiment, i would say the fascism came first, even if the both compliment each other in an endless feedback loop.

You'd have to be incredibly low-IQ to fall for clickbait gaming journalism. If you pay attention, everyone is always a victim, except for the gamers who regularly get short-changed by the industry. In this case, we were short-changed by poor voice acting. People gave her feedback, and she doesn't like it. Who cares? Maybe she should grow up.

>couple troll accounts say mean things
>simp squad to the rescue! she was perfect and if you didn't like it you're a chud incel!!!
Social media was a mistake...

Idk what to say. Did Ada's VA did a poor job? Absolutely. Did we deserve a better VA for Ada? We sure did. Let alone considering the fact Separate Ways will be a separate (pun) big thing and likely charged extra for.

Is it solely Gao's fault? Nope. There were people at Capcom responsible for casting, voice acting, sound design and all the way up to people like producers and game directors. They allowed it to happen in the same way they allowed the shoddy RE3make to happen.

This happens every single time. She was being racist as hell too and deflecting the criticism by invoking "white privilege" nonsense.
Now if you say the performance was bad (it was), you are suddenly as bad as people sending death threats or whatever. NPC nonsense.

I watched his whole review. Overall a pretty decent review, but the part he talks about Lily Gao delivering depth was pure contrarian. At the very least the impression I got while playing the game was more like the voice actress didn't want to be there delivering her lines than Ada herself. Clearly, none of the main protagonists want to be in the situation they're in... an astute observation there, Shillup (joking, I don't think he's an actual shill).

People are utterly stupid. These threats and harassment should be reported to police and idiots making those threats should be punished. No matter how different or bad you think anyone's performance is there is no justification to make threats against them.

This is what I heard as well and i'm sorry but if it's true that she just went the instant Racist in reply too the threats and everything else then it's not of my interest to support anyone who thinks replying to criticism, even death threats in a way that would only fan the flames further ...Is worth any protection....
Senki Apr 2, 2023 @ 3:26am
Those comments aren't really ''harassment''. Are they exaggerating? Yeah, but they don't talk about anything other than the performance itself.

It's like saying that every person who called Dark Souls or Elden Ring trash is ''harassing'' Miyazaki. Not really how it works.
