Is there more than one Merchant?
Somehow, this never occurred to me in the original. The Merchant was just *the* Merchant, one guy who kept inexplicably getting places before you. Even if you killed him, he'd only disappear from that location, but he'd still be around elsewhere (the remake solved that a different way by making him invincible).

In the remake, though, the Merchant uses plurals kind of a lot. "The years haven't been kind to us," "We're rootin' for ya," things like that. Is there just more than one of these guys? On one hand, that makes more sense, but on the other, it just raises further questions, like how they all seem to be aware of you.

no the man loves to travel a lot. so expecting him so often is not rare just a gift in situations you'll thank him for later.

It was lightly implied he was also a Ganado in the original, just friendly and not subservient to Saddler, if I recall. His eyes glowed at night. There's no hint of this in this remake as far as I've seen but if that were somehow true, then maybe he refers to himself in the plural due to the parasite.
That or he's lightly breaking the fourth wall, talking to the player like "We the creators of the game are rooting for you" and also mentioning the years between the original and remake. By the original's creation, he's quite an old character, someone we've known for a long time, and this is his return to the audience.

The merchant is Sindri from God of War. He left that world long ago to join up as a merchant in the resident evil universe. Think about it. He upgrades stuff, buy treasures from you, is able to randomly appear in multiple locations conveniently. Time has not aged him well.

why does he keep calling us stranger, like bro i've spent hundreds of thousands of gold at your shop the least you can do is remember my name

It's more fun and endearing to imagine it's the same guy, that way it's easier to feel you develop some weird sort of friendship with him.

Well he knows his way around better than a foreigner. he might even have tunnels running through the whole place, it's not that hard to believe he gets to the next area before you.

If you play on higher difficulties in the original game, killing the merchant meant he would never appear again if I'm not mistaken.

Also he uses plural I assume because in Resident Evil 8, the Duke also references the Merchant from this game calling him an old friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Nx-7MTrcNM

The Duke is also a very mysterious merchant traveler with an almost omnipresence level of knowledge. The fact he references the Merchant makes me they're the same type of being.

Finish all of his side quests and you'll find your answer.

He's a mysterious merchant that can appear in places before you've arrived....really that's all you need to know.

You are mistaken, it only killed him in that location. On normal he'd respawn if you left and came back, on professional he does not respawn, but still appears later.

Its a meta comment. He's commenting on how himself and leon are back for a remake, and are doing this again.
