Professional S+ Rank Pistol choice
So I just got to the castle and been rocking real good with Sentinel Nine with laser sight so far. Just occured to my mind if there is any point to change it to Red9? And how does crit chance work against the plagas which sometimes come out after popping their heads? More damage or could it instantly kill the thing if I crit?

For my S+ pro run I ran with the starter pistol with the laser attachment and maxed it out and got the exclusive perk. I find the crits extremely good on higher difficulties. When I got to the island sometimes it felt like crits weren't working though.

I'm really trying to figure that out myself, specifically which gun gives a higher crit rate between the SG and the S9. I've been maxing out a pistol and then running a tough section with it, and honestly so far it seems like my blacktail is performing better. I haven't tried the red9 so I can't speak for that. I'm mainly trying to find out if crit>power and if so, which gun has the better crit. I don't think capcom would make them both the same, and I notice the reticle gets tighter with the SG than the S9, so my guess is SG has the highest crit to balance out, but neither seem to make much of a difference over raw power for now, so it might be worth it to try the red9. I did read that some people say their melee crit rate goes up when you have a x5 crit handgun equipped as well, so if that's true that seems pretty important. I do believe I read a crit will prevent a plagas from popping out in the first place, and I'm not sure if they can be crit or not, mine were taking waaaay too many shots after they popped out compared to the blacktail, but it seems like they should be able to be crit.

That's what I did for my Professional Handcannon run. I mean if they take 4 headshots to die on Professional, then some of those might as well be crits so you're getting good value.

Red9 is garbage because at some point (and that point comes as soon as cabin siege tbh) you don't want high damage per bullet. You want high DPS. And Red9 is terribly slow.

Besides, you already grabbed the laser sight, and that's a lot of spinels you could use elsewhere. It only works with two crit pistols and the Punisher, so those are your options. I'd say SG/Sentinel Nine for Professional and Punisher for every difficulty below that.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. And here you have a good point so I'll just stick around with Sentinel Nine. I really like the gun anyways since it is super accurate with laser sight.

Speaking of Sentinel Nine: is it considered a standard weapon or special weapon? I ask this because I still have to get the Handcannon and I don't own the Deluxe Edition. I'd have to buy the S9 DLC and I don't want to screw my run. Just making sure...

Pretty sure the only weapons considered bonus are the primal knife, Chicago typewriter and the handcannon

Are you trying to get it just to sell it? It's not very good.

No. I'll only sell the Chicago Sweeper and Primal Knife once I get them. I'll be using Sentinel Nine in the beginning of the Handcannon run.

You sound like someone who hasn't use the Red9. For a Professional S+ rank run, I think the Red9 is too much of an investment. But a maxed out Red9 with stock and exclusive is easily the best regular handgun in the game because of the damage it does.

The crit percentage received a huge nerf this time around and having a few crits every now and then doesn't make up for being able to kill most regular human enemies in 1-2 shots (and some 3), no matter where you shoot them. And when they go Plagas mode it's also very easy to kill them with a handgun.

I think the idea here is to not waste money on several weapons with the same purpose. When you already invested in S9, go with it and spend the money on something else.

There's a place for the S9 and the money not spent upgrading another pistol will be a trade-off. Once you see a plaga, shoot with with a shotgun or rifle, then maybe finish it off with your pistol if needed.

You were right. Got to the island and I barely crit anymore <.<

What is the percent of reclaimed funds? Including the cost to rebuy the gun etc.

Side question: Does selling the chicago count as "using a bonus weapon" for S+ purposes?

S+ allows the use of Bonus weapons, the only stipulations are the save limits (for Professional), on a NG file (no NG+), and under a defined time limit depending on difficulty.

Also I personally used the Sentinel Nine until I got rid of everything besides the Semi-auto and Handcannon at the Castle

Because the enemies there wear helmets and bulletproofed vests
