Not like running out of rifle ammo was a serious concern though, and semi-auto was much better for stun-locking or not getting hit against those mini-bosses. (Also chainsaw ganado had a weird max-damage mechanic; they couldn't take more than 8 or so damage per shot)
Regenerators are more or less why I use it. If I had the choice of putting bioscope on my punisher I would.
Sometimes I take off the scope and use it as a mini-magnum to kill plagas and kill heavies quickly.
If we are talking fully upgraded then stingray loses to the CQBR in every way. CQBR with it's exclusive does more damage than stingray and is naturally faster than stingray before any upgrades due to being full auto. And while it's full auto it's actually pretty easy to just one tap for a single shot, so you don't have to spray all your ammo if you don't want to.
Stingray is IMO better if you don't intend to get an exclusive upgrade for your rifle, but again when talking fully upgraded then stingray is the worst Rifle as it has no unique advantage over either of the other two rifles. Bolt action has over double the fire power which with 3X weakspot multiplier is a massive difference and CQBR is just better overall than stingray.
I hate to admit it but the bolt action is just plain better. You couldn't upgrade the fire rate before, it takes up half the space and the semi auto was way more powerful than it is now. But I'll always switch to the Stingray because it was/is one of my favourite weapons.
I don't know why but I find the bolt action part of bolt-action rifles really satisfying. Just somehow makes the weapon feel even more powerful every shot takes manual action like that. Admittedly that's purely aesthetic.
They both use rifle ammo, so of course you must pick, but it depends if you want to use your rifle for tough standard enemies and mob groups, Bullheads, Salvador, and standard enemy hordes.
In this case the Stingray is just objectively "better" for that scenario, the extra damage per bullet of the bolt action is just overkill on those things, so going for rate of fire and clip size is better.
However, you can treat the bolt action as a kind of "budget magnum" as someone said earlier they killed Salazar on pro in 10 bolt action rifle shots. and even though that extra damage I overkill for standard enemies, 1 bullet is still 1 bullet, so it makes no difference when it comes to ammo use.
Im using the stingray atm just to see how it feels but i was actually trying for a hard mode run, I would probably pick the bolt action and just count on a handgun / sub machine gun for standard groups.
So I guess my vote goes for bolt action, but it's not a complete black and white choice where one is the obvious winner for all scenarios.
I use the rifle as plaga clearer when I don't want to use a flashbang and Stingray even at full power doesn't always kill a plaga head in one shot. At full power BAR doesn't have such issues.
