Castle Section (RE4 OG vs. RE4 Remake)
So the castle was always the highlight of RE4 for me. Loved the atmosphere and the banter between Leon and Ramon.

For the remake the village was very close to the OG. Most was the same except for the Lake area and the post cabin area. The castle however feels very different. Most of the set pieces are the same, but all the connective tissue is different. Some areas were removed and new ones were added. While the set pieces remained they were all changed. Ex. the Ramon statue, or Ashley's bit. Another would be the minecart which was for sure more action feeling, but the stress of health and ammo management was removed. It felt very different and I was left feeling that I may have enjoyed the OG castle better.

Anyone else the same as me?

Not sure on island yet as I've just gotten there. OG island was my least favorite though. Setting felt so removed from the first two locations.

The way I see it both games are good and fortunately they are different experiences, because overall I much prefer the original game. The island feels about as different as the castle did, maybe even more. Which I actually think is a good thing, because as I said, otherwise I'd just play the original.
I believe there was an interview where they said that the OG castle was more like a video game obstacle course rather than an actual believable castle, what with all the trap rooms and barely any living spaces, hence these changes.

Same goes for the giant Ramon statue chase scene. Just far too cheesy., while the remake tries to be a more serious game. Although it's worth noting that the statue is still there during the clock tower climb segment.

Anyhow, I think it's good that the remake does its own thing instead of being a simple graphics refresh.

Cool catch on the interview. Yes I suppose there were "gamey" elements. Like the lava room always felt out of place. Still, they were memorable.
The entire point of the original game was action and setpieces, and the plot is consciously absurd as a result. All of it is in service of making the core gameplay mechanics shine in the different situations that most complemented it. And yes, that did include QTE sections like the statue chase. To me, this is a great aspect of the game. The remake tried to 'fix' these things and be more realistic but didn't totally commit, which I think resulted in an overall less entertaining experience that wasn't supplemented with any kind of interesting writing or drama, with most of the comedy relief feeling more out of place.

But I do like the remake. They fleshed out Ashley and Krauser. The merchant requests and spinel currency are interesting. The gem inlaying is nice. I like the idea of the expanded knife combat, although I'm not a major fan of the durability, so I wonder if they could have balanced it better for a system that didn't have that.

I prefeer Remake Castle way more, the pacing and visuals are great

Village = OG
Castle = Remake
Island = Remake

Village goes to OG because of the atmosphere IMO
I have 2000 hours in og. 2600 in remake. I agree 100% what u wrote and actually that is the only thing og did better. Castle section was so good and now in remake mostly a drag

Exactly my thoughts, you'd have to play it over 100 times to play for so long!!
