Personal Favorites:
Knife: Primal Knife
Handgun: Red9 or Sentinel 9 ( SG-O9 R if you don't have this Weapon )
Shotgun: Riot Shotgun
Rifle: SR M1903
SMG: LE-5
Magnum: Killer 7
- BAR (Bolt Action Rifle). Its basically a long range accurate magnum. I actually recommend NOT using the scope most of the time except when you need it. On headshots its dmg is high enough to outright prevent most plaga from ever spawning when properly upgraded. It benefits extremely well in terms of usability if you upgrade its reload and other stats but you can rush dmg and an exclusive ticket to get it to insane dmg if you want. It penetrates so you can line up shots through multiple heads if yo are good at pulling them together or fighting in a tight area. If a plaga did spawn it can kill multiple plaga in one shot very reliably, only rarely do they have so much HP it survives a round. Its ammo efficiency due to its high dmg and penetration stat are off the charts. It replaces the typical shotgun role for killing groups of mobs with ammo efficiency you see in most games. It also penetrates wood shields for headshots if you are good at predicting where head is. Stingray is good if you aren't good with BAR but honestly quite inferior overall.
- Riot Gun. It has great dmg, sheer DPS on bosses if you can get close, and very good for breaking shields if you don't got spare sniper rounds. It is superb for ragdolling which means you can simply increase the ammo capacity and then just run throuhg an area ragdolling everything like the water room, no need to kill just send them flying if they get near and run past. Striker may work for ragdoll tactic in a speedrun (I've never tested it for this) but for general use the Striker is just an all around low performer due to its pitiful accuracy, range, and unfocused dmg. If your goal is dmg, not ragdolling, you can rush its dmg stat and put an exclusive ticket in this to boost its dmg very high. I recommend exclusive for this weapon as a priority if you are not a BAR fan and thus going with Stingray, otherwise BAR gets priority imo.
The two above basically crowd out magnums outside infinite ammo due to ammo scarcity and fact they perform so high and versatile.
You can use any pistol but arguably the Sentinel 9 / HG are among the best due to the crit factor and laser sight, but the others honestly aren't really that far behind and could even scale better at lower difficulties.
TMP is really good but you have to be good with it and use it in the right situation. So is the LE 5. SMGs are actually far more ammo efficient than pistols if used right.
Riot Gun for Shotguns
SR M1903 for Snipers.
For Smg's I'd say the Typewriter but I hate it's recoil so I'll go with the LE.5
I will second not using a scope on the BAR as well. It tends to ready up faster and as long as you're not attempting long range shots ( which I honestly barely do with any rifle ) or fighting regenerators it's far easier to use without the scope.
Shotgun: W870 because it's a brutal shotgun with a decent fire rate. Riot Gun is second, less spread and slightly more DPS, but I prefer pump action shotguns.
Magnum: Killer 7. Point and click, high crit rate, superb accuracy, fast reloads.
Shotgun: Skull Shaker for the cool flippy animation when leon shoots, it feels so good to unload lmao.
Rifle: SR M1903 (First rifle, apparently the M1903 Springfield IRL). I like the look of it in general, very rustic and I enjoy using it. Stingray is okay. CQBR is ass for the amount of rifle ammo available.
Pistol: Red9 because DAMAGE, with stock.
Magnum: I don't really tend to enjoy using magnums only because ammo is so scarce, but probably the Killer7 just for pure firepower. The Handcannon has higher firepower but the recoil is GAHD DAYUM, basically makes it unusable, and reloading is a pain with it as well.
SMG: Chicago Sweeper for infinite ammo. At 2 damage a bullet when it's maxed out, it makes Pro S+ runs super easy and it's satisfying to just unload on a group of enemies. With Gangster Leon skin for maximum effect ofc.
Melee: Primal Knife, infinite knife, ez
Special: Infinite Rocket Launcher ofc
For serious play:
Shotgun: Riot Gun. Fast(er) shots at a distance and power. I would use Skullshaker here but the distance on it is pitiful. I did do my S+ Pro run with Skullshaker though, so, idk.
Rifle: Stingray. Semi-auto and not un-scoping between shots is great.
Pistol: Red9 with stock. DAMAGE!
Magnum: Killer7, or more often Broken Butterfly. Like I said, I don't really like using Magnums due to the scarcity of ammo.
SMG: LE 5. The piercing power of the LE 5 makes it a lifesaver sometimes. On my S+ Pro run I did use the Sweeper though, but I carried the LE 5 with me for some sections.
Melee: Primal Knife
Special: Rocket Launcher
SMG: Literally doesn't matter. I'd choose TMP because you can get it earlier
Rifle: BAR. Guaranteed 1-tap trash mobs with exclusive. Mini-bosses run in fear of this weapon. Krauser malds. Good exclusive ticket candidate.
Shotgun: Riot. I don't like starter/SS due to the inability to do anything until you action the SG. Striker ok too.
Magnum: K7 cause laser
I'm tempted to experiment with this but my Blacktail is serving me well.
The best use of the striker is breaking the ammo economy
If I'm in a point where I need to push forward in tight locations with corners it, like all shotguns fit well in those situations.
Plus, in all truth there is a better option for almost every boss.
- Final boss? Rocket.
- Vergudo? Rocket.
- Krauser? Rocket, otherwise still pretty easy with a good Rifle / Shotgun.
- Ramon? Literally gold egg face at start and shoot him with Riot Gun or BAR (tip: if you stab him after a moment it further extends the animation if you need more time to shoot him, but don't stab him immediately otherwise you lose overall time). He will never get to attack a single time.
- Village Chief Mendez? Explosive mines instantly beats him if upgraded bow and enough mines properly set on ground + some on beams (if not enough mines you can supplement via shooting with a powerful rifle / Riot Gun). Otherwise, again Rifle is boss when he is far and Riot Gun when he is closer. You usually wont see a magnum used on him anyways and he is too easy to worry about carrying a magnum just for him.
- Chain saw sisters? Mine trick like Mendez or, alternatively, start the fight with a grenade to ragdoll + dmg them. Shotgun them / rifle them accordingly after. If you have more flash / grenades you can repeat and they wont ever get to fight. Otherwise, Rifle is a great ranged option and there are many places to funnel them plus the mobs to pierce multiple enemies and boss like the bridge and stairs with each rifle round.
- El Gigante (single)? Just the BAR with proper upgrades (and if you need a flashbang) will kill it before it ever takes a single step even in Pro (you want reload speed and ammo capacity upgrade some to pull this off well).
- El Gigante (duo)? Drop in lava or just shotgun / rifle face of first, easy kill on second I don't think much more needs said as its one of the easiest bosses.
- Garrador (solo & duo)? 1 Heavy Grenade + BAR (1 bullet in back after grenade stuns) = dead. If you wait at the start of the duo fight until they're on the stairs you can kill mobs and stun both Garrador and kill them in like 10-20s with a single heavy grenade and 1 BAR bullet each if fully upgraded dmg and exclusive.
As for trash mobs I don't think I need to say much there. In short, you can roll over all the bosses so effectively already there isn't a spot for Magnums unless you are like NG+ 5 and just have lots of magnum ammo and a fully upgraded magnum ready and just want to pop mendez or el gigante with it because you can rather than because its effective.
I ran nearly my entire first Pro run aiming for S+, too, and got it using only BAR + Riot Gun (and three rockets as mentioned) from first merchant onward (first shotgun until I got Riot Gun I used for area just after first merchant. I sold my pistol at first merchant doing that, too, so it meant only shotgun + rifle ammo dropped and it worked very well though I did buy a side bolt gun to use for Mendez / Chainsaw sisters (first time I did the mine tactic for them and I screwed it up on both lol and had to use rifle / shotgun). Thus it definitely works very well. It was quite comfy really with ammo economy.
A note about rockets. You can buy one rocket PER region (village, castle, island, but if you don't buy it in its region you miss it until NG+. If you buy one in an earlier region and then use it in a later one (ex. buy in village, use in castle) you can immediately buy a new one once you no longer own a rocket if you haven't bought one in that region yet hence 3 rockets per playthrough. There is the infinite rocket which is only 2m in NG+, too, if you really want... no challenge in unlocking just pure money to buy it on any NG+.
I definitely recommend giving the SMGs some experimentation, at least the TMP. I haven't gotten around to fully testing the LE 5 but it might actually be extremely good for trash mobs due to its penetration stat but obviously NG+ only due to how late its gotten unless you wanna use it for the final assault on island.
Shotgun: typically riot gun, but when fully upgraded the pump action is a beast. Striker got nerfed pretty hard.
Rifle: Bolt action, hands down. Accurate, and reliably pops heads.
SMG: LE-5. I've found that the TMP is just too inaccurate.
Magnum: Killer-7, if you want to be able to reliably hit anything beyond 10 feet.
