it lacks the "romance" that Ashley had with Leon, but that was all misguided anyway on Ashley's part. She was just saved from a crazy situation by Leon, so of course she looked at him with googly eyes. Leon only ever wanted Ada, though, she was his "one that got away" from RE2, only to mysteriously return here. This game's treatment of Ashley is so cute though, how she looks up to him and says she wants to be an agent too and everything. I thought it was a great change from the original.

They did great for not including something that had no place in RE4 in the first place.

Besides, there was nothing romantic about it. Plus romantic moments have no place in a game like RE4.
