I dunno if you started RE randomly in a either game. So, i will tell you all the stuff that i know. Listen:
- RE 1,2&3 ( Old Play Station System), Should be keep away. All them are a jewels from an older age. Fortunatelly, (but not at all) you can play RE 2 Remake like first.
The game starts a few days after the incidents happend in RE 1 ( and they are deeply explained in RE 5, but you should read all the notes that you will find on the main gameplay).
Obviously i recomend you the RE 1 "Remake" ( It is a new rebuild of the Resident Evil 1 of Play Station but launched in the age of Nintendo Game Cube System. New look, new physics, better, improved and a bestseller long time ago). ...BUT!!! (...big but here).
Keep in mind that it is old looking compare the newest ones. Newest ones are probably ones of the highest capcom crown jewels ever maded. But the beguining of the story, started in RE1 and both main characters, "Chris Redfield" & "Jill Valentine" are the protagonists of the following games, but not from RE 2 Remake onwards. Their continuation starts in RE 3 for Jill and in RE 5 for Chris. On the other hand, the main plot of "Leon S. Kennedy" and "Claire Redfield" ( ...exactly. She is surnamed "Redfield" because she is the sister of "Chris Redfield" from the previous chapter), starts in RE2 and resumes its continuation in RE 4 ONLY for "Leon S. Kennedy". I couldn't explain more info 'coz it is spoiler.
There is other RE launched in the same epoc of RE 1 "Remake" for Game Cube. Resident Evil 0 which happen at the same parallel time of RE 1. The story deeps in to the "lore" of the franchise. It is mainstreem story but it only has importance if you are interested in the RE novels. If you don't and don't too also on the old look viewing as RE 1 do, you can keep this chapter away 'coz until today, the main characters of this game, have not other games.
The saga do a pause with the end of RE 6 (beaten for the community but... for me its good! I like it! ). But been honest, looks a bit for take the money of the fans.
RE 7 its MY FAVOURITE. The story has not any conection with previously mainstreem lore but ...i can't say any more 'coz ...spoiler to.
It is a wonderfull saga. Loved for millions of followers. I started with it when i was 17yo. Today im 40 ...and i love it more.
I really hope they're going to remake RE 1 Remake (because I want the Crimson Heads) in RE Engine.
Sure but how about with RE 2 Remake gameplay? I don't see how a step back in mechanics is a deal breaker here. Wasn't there a survey or something like that issued by Capcom after the release of RE 4 Remake in which they were asking players which remake they'd like next? I remember RE 1 and CV being listed there.
I mean the additional mechanics between RE 2 Remake and RE 4 Remake are superficial at best. Like kicking and sneaking? I don't know that anyone would be mad about those mechanics missing from an ulterior entry. They could also leave sneaking in there I suppose.
Also, RE1 already got a remake years ago, so...
Well yeah but it can hardly be considered part of the RE Engine series of remake. It doesn't count.
And I hope that if they give RE 1 the same treatment as the others, it would be a remake of the remake so that the Crimson Heads and new areas are present.
In any case, I'm sure they can find a way to make it fresh enough as to be enticing to "non-hardcore" fans.
