Are there any guns that just plain suck or is everything viable?
I'm reaching the point (Chapter 7) where there's more selection available and I don't wanna waste money upgrading a piece of junk. I just switched out the bolt-action rifle for the semi-automatic one which seemed better in every way but some searching shows the starter rifle is super powerful when max upgraded so like did I make a mistake lol?

change for the stinger, also most people are using the red 9 for hand gun . i much prefer the punisher, shooting tru shield and crowds can be a life saver and ammo saver. riot shotgun also good pick.

I'm pretty sure every gun is good enough to beat the game with. The only one I think sucks is the Striker, and that's because its spread is too wide for shooting anything except enemies that are right in your face, but even that still has its uses.

Also see a lot of people complaining about the Bolt Thrower but I found it useful.

one you get most of the upgrade money back if you sell the weapon. Also weapons have uses but it will always come down to how you want to play. I find the first rifle awful as a missed shot is awful where as the automatic one i can correct and land the follow up easier.

personal preference, bolt action hits harder but slower, while the stingray hits faster but a bit weaker, i prefer the stingray myself for headshotting pesky enemies without descoping.

You mean rifle series?
Yep personal preference. They each have their own strong point and weakness. You have to be creative to around the weakness to make the most out of the weapons.
There's a new rifle in chapter 9 received for free from cubic device locked cabinet. You can try it if you want.

Beside of rifle,
There's also a familiar pistol you can trade from merchant soon in chapter 8. Try it if you want. I've chosen it as my choice of pistol and I've beaten the game anyway (hardcore difficulty). Its bottom among pistol but I got it to work somehow.

The bolt thrower is pretty good and can do crazy damage with the mines but you get like NO bolts through drops in this game. You can make them but I just don't think you get enough knives to be worth crafting bolts especially when the knives are so incredibly useful otherwise. Yeah you can retrieve your bolts but I always end up missing and then they land in a place I can't get them from lol

You get 50% of the gun's base price, and about 90 - 95% or so of upgrade prices when you sell the gun, so upgrade freely without worry.

As for weapons, the bolt thrower and TMP are kinda trash (in my opinion) though there are some nice speedrun tricks you can use the bolt thrower for. Thrower is supposed to "save ammo" but it just does no real damage to speak of, and makes fights take way longer than they should. I just use the knives rather than craft into arrows, and carrying arrows + mines takes more space than I'd prefer, especially early when you have a small case. The TMP was a borderline overpowered laser beaming stun machine in the original game, and it definitely is a shadow of it's former self now. Very inaccurate, even with the stock attachment. It does okay enough damage if you point-blank it, but that's not really my style so I ditched it quick. Pretty much everything else seems more or less workable, and they all find a pretty good niche.

E- Oh and yeah, Red9 and Bolt Action for life babyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I myself didn't like the crossbow. Would not say it just plain sucked but it just didn't work for me.

I ended up swapping back to the starting rifle in near the end because it had more stopping power (popping heads) than the M16 or whatever that thing is.

Honestly I've been using the TMP quite a bit, I think it's good for stunlocking single foes and does decent damage.

If it works, it works. I think my main issue was that the TMP was my favorite gun in the original game, and I was a bit let down when I bought it on the remake. I also think it taking large resources is a big hit to usability, as I think those are better served for grenades and such, but again it's just my opinion on that.

The crossbow is easily one of the best weapons, considering it's the only one to get close to having infinite ammo. You should use it first whenever you would use a handgun instead, it even has more damage and rate of fire than most. There are entire sections in the game where you can save dozens of ammunition thanks to the sneak + crossbow mechanic, and even unstealthed fights where enemies are scattered can all be done flawlessly with just the crossbow, you just kill, pick up the bolts, and repeat.

The only way the crossbow isn't god-tier is if ammo drops are 100% guaranteed to rise into the stratosphere when you have nothing left, because then saving ammo is irrelevant. But if you're not trying to save ammo, you're playing with fire.

On standard... it doesnt even matter at all. Talking about hardcore and pro.. the stingray doesnt kick it. Striker and punisher also are meh. Nobody cares about penetration when there are only a hand full of shield enemies.. and everyone and their mothers just pop some shells or the sniper for them. Also nobody actually has time to line everyone up for it to be useful.

TMP is nice against bosses and staggering trash. LE 5 is.. a weird gun. Better in almost every way than the TMP but dmg isn't great for some reason.

Dont care about the assault rifle. Probably won't ever use it. MIssed opportunity for capcom to make a great weapon, it's a sad weapon that has it's merits but gets totally destroyed by the fact that it needs precious rifle ammo.

Dunno about matilda.. some swear by it .. some say it's trash. Didnt use it yet. The most interesting question is which handgun to pick.

Blacktail, S9/starter or red9... they all have their merits and I tend to go for style over substance. I just love the laser and design of the S9. Yeah crits are rng.. rng is bad. Still a fun gun. Not as reliable than blacktail and red9's raw power. But a real fun gun. That crit head pop is so satisfying. Not getting as much plaga pops also is a godsent on hardcore and pro.

Crossbow... meh.. I suck at it. It may be good for some situations.. but I just hate shooting with it. So eh.

All in all.. no weapon is actual trash. Besides punisher imho.

I use blacktail, crossbow, starter bolt rifle, and riot shotgun, then broken butterfly but it's my only option for now. Priority is damage before anything else, and crossbow/blacktail before anything else, because one has infinite ammo and the other has the attache case ammo drops.
