Do NOT ride the elevator until you're absolutely sure you've done everything in the castle!

Once you ride the elevator you're stuck until you beat Salazar. Merchant man is up there as well and he will politely tell you to take care of any unfinished errands because you're nearing the point of no return. The thing is, you're already past it...

I ran around for half an hour trying to look for a way down and didn't find one.
If there is a way down and I just missed it I'd like to know.
