What you didn't know about the Mysterious Merchant

Why is it that he's never in danger? Why is it that he won't sell us ammo directly? Why does he buy up all the treasure from these places?

he's never in danger because he made a deal with Salazar a long time ago, in fact, he is a Salazar himself. He buys up all the treasures because they belong to his family, not the Plagas. you "finding" them then bringing them to him allows him to pay you.

It's part of the deal the Plagas made with him, to lure people to them. He's allowed to sell you weapons, and weapon upgrades. Those do nothing in themselves. he can sell you things to make ammo with. Look at his face closely. Why do you think he wears that scarf covering most of his face? Deep down, you know.

He wants to kill the plagas, but he can't do it directly without putting himself in danger. He does, however, leave ammo around the village, castle, and iron works for you to find. he also puts some in the pockets of those wondering around the halls for you to find after you kill them. Didn't you wonder why they carried around pesetas, bullets, and all that other lovely stuff? He planted it all.

(NOTE: no, I don't know any of this for sure. I made this up as a backstory for why the Plagas always have things for you to gather, and the random ammo scattered around the places you go, and why no one attacks him. wouldn't it be kewl if there was an easter egg that explained who he was?)

On the topic of the merchant, I noticed that his eyes don't glow at night in the remake. In the original game, it implied that he was infected.

hes a group of AI's from the future sent back in time to spur on bloodshed and record everything for historical bloodsport entertainment. he doesn't sell ammo because it wouldn't be exciting to watch otherwise.
