you shouldn't be able to change difficulty mid game, either deal with it or restart

I don't think games are meant to be played on hard on the first run, some people do that but suffer the consequences of frustration like your case.

right, don't play on hard mode in a blind run
It doesn't need adaptive difficulty. It's supposed to be hard and more challenging when selecting higher difficulty. Nonetheless, this is survival horror game which means you can't just run & gun and waste all your ammunition and resources. Use them wisely! Besides, play more, get good.

I was going to do hardcore, but decided to do Normal just so I'm not grinding for $, I wanted to try out different weapons and upgrades.

Any idea if the game still uses an adaptive difficulty like the original? Sure feels like it sometimes.

Example:
The better you do, the more accurate your shots= Harder Enemies
If you are getting your @$$ kicked = Easier Enemies

Hardmode is hard for your first run. I've picked it because it recommends it if you've played the original. I suppose using a keyboard and mouse would make things easier though. I like the challenge but there are some difficulty spikes. I'm not sure if I'd move on to pro mode next and might do a new game plus on hardmode. Or maybe I'll be better at parrying by the end. Parrying does seem very important and knowing when to use it.

If you're really halfway through then you shouldn't have any issues finishing the game off. Once you're in the flow of things it becomes quite routine, and there's only so much the game can throw at you. Get to the point where you can handle the basic humanoid enemies and you're good for the vast majority of the game.

Also keep in mind that the game generally gets easier as you go along because your weapons become more and more powerful while the enemies stay about the same.

With all the complaining about Hardcore mode I was dreading certain sequences like the Water Room. Turns out it's even easier in this version than the original. :steammocking:

To be fair to OP it says in game that "Hardcore is recommended for players who played the original RE4" but yeah, if you don't want to be challenged don't pick hard on the first run.

I see, though we don't know if OP played the original or not, but if a game told me "Hardcore is recommended for players who played the original RE4" I'd pick hardcore too, even if I prefer normal difficulty at first.

It's a basic QOL of life feature that should be in the game. It's not like the OP needs to prove they can play the first half of the game as they already have. So replaying it is just a silly "punishment" that "gamers" make up in their heads to feel like they are doing anything important in their life. Most of the people in here are not speedrunners and the OP isn't a speedrunner trying to "cheat" so it doesn't matter and should be there. After all these are just games so nothing that important.

Holy crap, a sane person who's head isn't up their own ass!
I almost got stuck on the castle in hardcore until I started using the bolt thrower. I'm trying to spread this message so everyone else playing hardcore on their first run knows it.

Get the Bolt Thrower, upgrade it and use it in every single encounter you can. It staggers better than a pistol I can promise you that, and I've used it against the bullhead guys.
