besides the explosive bolts, is the crossbow worth upgrading fully?

it's a good weapons early on to save ammo since you can get back the bolt

It's difficult to find times to use it because the game throws so many enemies at you. I use it less as the game goes on. You aren't going to end up with tons of excess ammo for using it. It seems good parrying skill is key to having excess ammo.

It's one of my favorite weapons in the game, because as long as you don't whiff bolts into the void, you can re-collect them. Perfect for kneecap/melee combos.
I say it might be worth it when you get to the Castle just for the exploding arrows. I just got to the second of a new enemy and my god it was a pain in the ass to deal with him lol. Having some options for crowd control could definitely help. No matter how you run it though it eats up a lot of ammo dealing with, as far as I can tell, endless spawning enemies.

What difficulty are you on? I find the "recover bolts" thing almost useless on standard difficulty because you get so much ammo. It's also pretty slow and most encounters have lots of enemies, making it too cumbersome. Same with the rifle honestly.

In the original RE4 I always felt a shotgun and pistol were good enough for the whole game almost, and I feel the same with this one so far.

That said the bolt recovery thing could be epic on professional where ammo is scarce, I dunno.

Is the semi automatic sniper rifle from the original replaced by the stinger? Because that looks like an automatic rifle to me which seems like a waste of ammo and the damage looks crap. There are some crossbow guys that are hard to hit with the red 9.

I'm on Standard, and I'm typically pretty low on ammo, even using the bow gun.

I don't find that big groups make the bow gun useless. If the group is TOO big, I use an explosive bolt. But even if I don't use an explosive, I've got the thing fully maxed out. It tends to take one or two bolts to drop an enemy, and it fires really fast.

Yeah it's worth it until you reach the castle

I've found it invaluable on Hardcore, turns out you can kill almost anything with it.

I often forget i even have it. The only use i got out of it was against shields to save shotgun shells and against the gigante which is pretty decent if you can stuck a mine on the plaga on his back.

I killed Garrador/blind prisoner with bolts only.

I stabbed him to death, he's not hard. At least not the first one, which is still by himself.

That's a waste of knife durability, what's your point?

I thought it would be a decent pick up but it's kinda trash. The game throws too many enemies at you at the same time for the bolt thrower to have a place. Yes there are times when you can kill the lone guy and save some ammo but I regret my decision to buy it.
The mines are decent but too slow to use and all in all it takes up too much space in your inventory

Also it's super triggering to have bolts be unrecoverable and have them marked on the map for the rest of your playthrough.

Just finished first run on HC, there were definitely some encounters where the explosive bolts helped but I think I will be skipping the crossbow on future runs. There are just so many bad guys that the normal bolts I ended up just not using them anymore by the time you get to castle so it basically became a grenade launcher for shield guys, or big groups
