I do wish I hadn't gone for hardcore at first
Longtime RE4 veteran so when hardcore said for veterans of the original game, I was like, sure.

I don't think it was wise. It kind of makes everything a bit worse without being challenging hard. Knife breaks a little faster, you take inconvenient amounts of damage. Unless you're just looking for the hardest difficulty out of the gate, I'd probably recommend normal.

I found out you cannot change the difficulty mid-game, so that's annoying, so I'll emply every gamer's favorite fallacy: Sunk Cost!

Love the game though, even if Leon feels generally clunkier when compared to what you're fighting. Not a fan of the inconsistent staggers from head and leg shots though. Can't tell if the hitbox is that more granular and your placement has to be far more specific or if it's a feature of hardcore though.

Mendez fight also sucks but I think it's because in the second phase he's got too many hard to read/dodge attacks. It's kind of lame. I generally think hardcore is souring me on the game, but I don't want to give up on all the progress.
Wait until Verdugo PPP
I just don't understand why Capcom worded it like that. Was this really the intended experience for people who have played RE4? 'Cause oh boy I beat RE4 like 9 times over the years and I just spent 50 minutes trying to get past Mendez' second phase. Idk, 10 hours in and this sorta feels like a chore. Kinda spoiling my enjoyment, ngl.
The one advantage of hardcore is autosaves, use that little symbol that appears on your screen with malicious intent. I will say I was dreading the Water Hall, but if you take the first phase of it fairly slowly and abuse the entrance to catch your breath then you can pick off a lot of baddies. The second phase can be a right pain but it autosaves a lot better than the original.

I died once and had Ashley captured once, but all in all. I was expecting a lot, lot worse.

Literally every streamer I watched who loved the original RE4 picked Hardcore, then restarted because it was too hard and not fun.

I know I'm just stuck in it and if I can beat Nioh, Resident Evil 4 and 5 on Professional. Resident Evil 4 VR, Jedi; Fallen Order on the second-hardest difficulty. I can muddle through this with the occasional blue streak.

Hardcore feels really inconsistent though and it really brings down the pacing.

If you played the original RE4 and beat it soundly on all difficulties, then Assisted and Standard might be a bit too easy for you. I know it was for me. I didn't bother with Assisted so I opted for Standard difficulty and even then, it was just a bit too easy (assuming you know how to craft, and are very selective when firing shots vs. spray and pray with bullets).

Hardcore is "Normal Difficulty" for experienced RE4 players. It even says something like that on the description when you select it.
Agree. Hardcore could've used some balancing. Given the parry timing takes time to get used to, coupled with no reliable hit stuns most times from the handgun, it's not the greatest first experience. The cabin fight was a b*tch...died there 6 times, and I've beaten the OG on Pro a couple times.

Fun fact: I ran around for almost an hour in the castle with 10 ammo on my handgun - no ammo for my other guns, no grenades, and 1 healing item. It sucked, but I had a similar experience with RE2 remake on Hardcore. It was liberating when I got supplies after that...ha!

I really need to learn to employ the bolt thrower in group situations. Fully upgraded it can be a nice weapon, but it's tricky to use under pressure for me.
I don't like to ruin the game for myself by playing on the baby mode (normal) on my first playthrough. Just finished my first playthrough on hardcore and now I'm gonna start a new game (not new+, it's too easy with all the unlocks) on professional.

The OG game even on professional new game (no upgrades or unlocks from last run) is too easy.

Did my first run on Hardcore and died to the first enemy. Puzzled, I tried again until I got it, experimenting on how to maneuver, avoid damage, and effectively deal it back (while adjusting to the controls). It took me a good 2 hours before the mechanics of the game began to gel and my reactions got better and faster to meet the combat situations. I died less and less.

It was tough, but I'm glad I started this way because it put the appropriate amount of tenseness into each encounter for my taste. As I improved, I began using the varied tools the game provides and had a richer time than the typical 'stand still and shoot slowly advancing enemies' I could get away with in OGRE4. Positioning, pathing, and target prioritization became factors and made the combat much more interesting coupled with the full freedom of movement we now have.

I'm no MLG wannabe, and I played on a pad.

Using the environment is meaningful and victories felt earned. Good shots felt clutch, I was using strategic aggression to win fights, and ammo was just scarce enough to keep me on my toes; it felt great. The game asked much more of me than the original, and for that I thank it.

The next hurdle I faced (and still haven't mastered even after beating the game) is to optimize and shave away hesitations in combat. I can get overwhelmed with the sheer breadth of variables during a fight and freeze up (4+weapons and their ammo, throwables, knives, movement, healing items is a lot to consider when surrounded by enemies to track). That is why I didn't get bored of the game for 20+ hour playthrough. It is an interesting puzzle of various optimizations constantly fluctuating in real time.

Not to disparage anyone playing on standard, but I personally like enough pushback from a game - the challenge helps keep me engaged.
I genuinely do regret doing the very first play-through hardcore, but it's done and I got a B so it is what it is. I would have probably enjoyed my playtime much more if it'd been standard. I guess I'll try professional at some point, but only when I'm better at perfect parries (which I guess professional would do).

Kind of just want to get ready for something like Jedi Survivor or something though. It took me over 20 hours to get through RE4R hardcore and I still missed one merchant request too, heck if I know where though.

My advice in general is don't get the TMP, wait for the MP5-ersatz. Invest the money you would put into the TMP into the bolt thrower instead. Learn to use that thing in open combat.
I wouldn't have started on hardcore but I challenged myself to beat the time of a streamer I'm watching. Still 3 or 4 chapters ahead of them because the chief messed them up real good. I might finish tonight before they get out of the castle. The first 3-4 chapters felt a lot tougher than the rest, the learning curve will lift you up at that point and encounters get a lot more controllable than in the early more open areas. All that even though my FPS sometimes dipped into the 40s during some scenes and inducing input lag. Chapter 14 and 22 hours in on a first run. If I had played on an easier difficulty I'd probably have been done 10 hours ago and felt later parts a lot less rewarding.

But also, yeah: it felt so much tougher at first that I almost felt bad compared to my younger self. The original did use the early areas in a similar fashion tough, throwing enemies in behind you and forcing you to learn the trickshots.
