Game never drops ammo on hardcore if you use knife?
It seems like there is some sort of curve where if you aren't low on ammo, it won't drop ammo. I upgraded the knife first and have found ways to funnel enemies to me such that I can use it. However, killing most of the enemies in the valley this way, out of all of them, I got literally not one ammo drop.

Perhaps it's a very odd statistical anomaly but it seems like there is something that if you have a reasonable amount of ammo it won't give you more?

I'm playing on standard and I've had ammo drop once so far, even when I was low on ammo. I don't think it's hardcore specifically. It seems like 90% of the drops are money with the occasional tiny bit of gunpowder.

A lot of games like this are designed this way. And by a lot, I mean dead space :^)
The less you use the ammo the less of that ammo you get. It generally drops stuff that you "need" but will balance it so youll always or should always have barely enough unless youre a good shot.

its like in halflife 2, when youre low on hp, youll find more hp in crates, and if youre low on ammo you find more ammo.

So its very normal. its meant to be hardcore, so more of a survival horror/action game on that setting, not action/horror with no survival.
So itll drop enough to keep it tense and making you worry about your next fix of ammo or health item

One possibility is the game could have a drop system similar to the original and games like Borderlands where ammo drop rate is boosted by a factor based on how much ammo you have of given ammo types. For example, if you are exceptionally low on shotgun ammo you're more likely to see shotgun ammo drop. If you're plentiful (even moderately) on ammo then it may become fairly rare drop such as when excessively using knife.

I cannot confirm if its like this without extensive testing which has not happened, yet, or if someone else tests or verifies it another way but its possible this could be the case like in the original. Then again, with gunpowder being relevant here I assume it is a tad more complicated, too.

EDIT: Bimbo beat me to it

I gotta say, shooters are a strength for me, I rarely miss (typically 90% at the end of chapter or better) and probably better than 90% of that are head shots.

This game is still not letting me stockpile the stuff 😂

If the drop system is similar to og re4, I'd start selling all handgun/shotgun/tmp ammo to let the system start dropping higher tier ammo for me. I purposely manipulate it in og re4 in new game run and this happened.

thats cuz its designed to not let you...
Youll get more ammo if you shoot more, BUT since you shoot more you have less ammo. It just gives enough to give you anxiety.
the game hands grenades out like candy though, so bosses will be easy :^) cuz I never use them till a boss LOL
My issue is the fact the knife breaks and the kitchen knives aren't worth but one or two uses. I'm doing Hardcore right now and I'm HURTING for ammo, even mats to craft what I need aren't dropping. I haven't seen gunpowder since the church rescue and I'm currently at the cabin with Luis.... That was enough to make me put the game down and take a break - grab some lunch, zone out to youtube.. something to distract me from that level of pain.
