treasure map and expanded treasure map are two different items.

Just thought i'd mention it, so the treasure map is still worth getting from the merchant if you own the deluxe dlc.

It seems that the deluxe treasure map "spawns" in the treasures and those cant be found without that but the original ones I think can still be found without the maps. (that second part is just speculation though)

yes, the game literally spawns in additional treasure which can't be found or seen at all if you don't own the dlc.

I have the dumb expanded map treasure map, can't even find the first one that's listed that I can seemingly access too on the Lakeside Settlement in the middle. I'm standing right where it's listed and there's just nothing, I checked the tree for a nest and I see nothing at all up there either.

But at least they mark which ones are extra so if you don't want to make the game easier you can just skip it altogether.

I'm having troubles with mine appearing as well. I even checked online: in the large cave shrine, there's a gold container that hasn't spawned. It's on the map, but nothing in game.

I figured out my issue: the dlc needed to be redownloaded. The treasures are now showing up for me. But I can confirm the dlc treasure map+ is separate from the in-game treasure map. Double the treasure!

I'm guessing it's one of those destroyable things you have to shoot down and it'll drop the treasure. It's just difficult to see.

there are birds nests. but they just contain normal items. the lantern type things are the extra treasure...

You might have already noticed but just in case you haven't they always make a noise so you can tell there is a lantern nearby without having to regularly look at map.
