Would also highly recommend a shotgun, mostly the Riotgun since its the best one.
Other than that, just personal preference, but a Magnum can be fun.
I'd second these two.
The unique upgrade for the Matilda gives it 60 rounds, and that combined with its insane fire rate makes it a better SMG than the MP5 and TMP.
The CQBR is an absolute monster with infinite ammo.
For shotguns I usually run with the Skull Shaker, but if you don't have it I'd say it's a toss up between the Riot Gun and Striker. You probably know by now they both kind of fit their own role.
As far as magnums go I usually stick with the Broken Butterfly over the Killer7 although that's personal preference. The Handcannon is cabbage in the remake so I'd avoid it.
Not the biggest fan, but it did carry my early game in S+, so i can respect that.
Don't think i used matilda yet, currently my favourite is Blacktail simply because of raw damage output and precision in comparison to legendary Red 9.
I actually do have Skull Shaker, but wasn't biggest fan of it. The standard shotgun was my favourite so far, but Riotgun is a decent boss melter too.
I was floored by how silly the Matilda was when I gave it a go. Without having to worry about pistol ammunition it's very powerful.

The reason I take the Skull Shaker over the other shotties is because it only takes up 5 spaces. That's less than most pistols. Its max fire rate and damage aren't bad either. Only holds like 7 shells though so it's best for quick crowd breaches or panic sprays rather than bosses, but you'll have the CQBR for them.
I might try it out then, currently i'm trying to run pistol/knife only, no healing and no merchant on save i had fully upgraded Blacktail. If no heals will be too harsh without extra weapons, i'll check up Matilda and just do pistol/knife only.
A tip if you go the CQBR. It doesn't work properly on standing regenerators, but if you break their leg first then shoot them while they're down they die basically instantly (at least if you are far enough back to get a proper angle on them).
For no healing run also consider the deer antlers and specifically fighting knife for 1st Krauser fight. Even on pro this will kill him before he even attacks (like literally 2-3s, on assisted should be even faster).
Personally, I'm not a fan of the Skullshaker. The other rifles don't take up much more space. In fact, the Striker is a far better version of the Skullshaker both in that it saves space, has a massive ammo capacity, fires far faster unlike the incredibly slow Skullshaker, while having more range spread and dmg. Otherwise just go for a good shotgun (notably Riot Gun as others mentioned). Imo, space is hardly an issue, especially with cat ears where you wont be using space on ammo.
Matilda is good but I don't see a point in it when TMP exists, especially with Cat Ears (but really even without).
Yeah, the way I tend to use the rifle, it's easily my choice. I use the rifle as (gasp!) a sniper rifle. So I'm not trying to pump as much lead downrange as possible, I'm trying to make each shot count as much as possible. So the bolt-action rifle is my rifle of choice.
The Skullshaker takes 5 slots. The Striker takes 10 slots, the Riot Gun and 870 both take 16. It's a pretty large difference across the board, but you're right in that it matters a lot less in an infinite ammo game. Also. the Skullshaker also has more damage than the Striker by about 2 points (unique is 2x weapon damage) and also has a higher stagger rate. The only things the Striker has on the other shotguns is mag size and fire rate. Preference for spread size is subjective.
Matilda is superior to the TMP in every category except mag size (60 vs 70) and stagger power (1.7 vs 2.1). There's no reason to use the TMP over it. If you want crowd control the MP5 is good with its penetration, if you want firepower the Matilda has a higher fire rate, damage, and accuracy than both SMGs. Only reason it's not viable in the standard game is because it eats a crazy amount of pistol ammo.
