OP, cat ears can be used for Handcannon but as you said you got it from mercs which was released post launch so its more of a timing issue where you came along and got it conveniently after. You can use the handcannon to unlock the cat ears but the handcannon, itself, is pretty overpowered. Its just a matter of if you want the cat ears for different weapons like making the Assault Rifle viable and fun to use on a playthrough, or if you want to run a crit pistol + crit emblem + melee hotswap from TMG after stun AoE kick build, or whatever. You can use cat ears for challenges like Duke mentioned such as Minimalist, etc.
Other than that there isn't really a difference so you're being unfair to both games. The OG didn't do anything "better" from a replayability standpoint. It gave the Handcannon from mercenaries just like the remake does. They both have roughly the same number of weapons. The difference is the remake has a bit more replayability because of better weapon balance (though magnums nerfed too hard), it has challenges to complete unlike the OG (minimalist, frugalist, silent stranger, etc.), it has achievements (if you care), and it has headgear for enhanced / different playstyle options that the OG did not have.
In short, the remake is a literal straight upgrade over the OG for replayability, albeit not significantly and value will differ between "better or equal" but its definitely not worse.
You need to complete the game at least once to unlock Professional. If you S+'d Professional on your 2nd playthrough, then I don't know what to say. You're really special.
If your inclination is to go directly to S+'ing Professional on your 2nd playthrough, then no wonder because you're skipping all of the other challenges and unlocks you can do in Standard and Hardcore mode and just rushing it.
Many people don't play Mercenaries until after they complete the main game.
I'm over 100 hours of gameplay and still not bored.
There are no extra awards or achievements or challenges or anything for playing NG+
On the other hand after getting cat ears you now have a comfortable way of getting No Merchant, No Heal, Minimalist run on a NG+ run.
If anything I've found this RE game to be one of the most repayable mainline games outside of just speedrunning it for faster completion times.
I'm surprised just how much of an Ich I still have to play this after beating it so many times. The last RE game I replayed this much was RE1 Remake.
I honestly liked replaying the OG story with all the weapons and besides I am not a big fan of cat ears...... cough I am talking to you halo infinite...
It's fun. But I'm seeing exactly what makes it more repayable than this.
I love the old controls and I don't minding the quicktime events because I've played alot of games with quick time events so I don't mind besides I like the original re4 leon better, so I play it for fun, I am not planning on playing re4 remake on console again anytime soon, I rather stick with old games.
