as we all know resident evil is about relationships. as re3 was about an abusive ex bf (nemesis) a battered woman (jill) and her new bf (carlos), what is re4 about?

the protagonist leon, similar to jill, is meant to represent someone recovering from a former relationship (ada). he unwillingly is matched with someone of high prestige (ashley) but must first go through a foreign land and culture he does not fully understand (spain, villagers). he does not seem too interested but is willing to sacrifice himself for his new love interest, although at first its more out of obligation than love. along the way he runs into his former love, and while he still has feelings for her, he continues on his journey towards ashley his new love.

we see a change in leon as he is carrying ashley to the chair to remove the plagas from within her (the plagas within both of them represent their past that is eating them up alive and they need to remove), leon says "this time it has to be different". what he means is that in the past with ada, their relationship did not survive, they were too different and ada was using him, and leon could not pull ada up and she fell (which represents him not being able to save/change ada from her ways). "this time it has to be different" leon is saying that unlike with ada in the past, this time he will save his love and they will make it out together.

in the end ada offers him a ride on her helicopter knowing full well ashley is not there, and leon responses that he can't do that. she then gives him keys to a jetski to escape with ashley. this symbolizes leon finally letting go of his former love who did not treat him well and also his former love helping leon to move on with ashley.

not entirely but it still is. if you compare og leon and ada to the remake, you can realy see the chemistry is very different. the chopper scene in the end is a big thing as both leon and ada still showed feelings to one another. with the remake you can see leon no longer wants ada is over her while ada still wants leon. you can also see ashley is starting to grow on new leon where as the old one blew her off.

exactly. Perhaps og re4 they intended to milk the Leon and Ada relationship for future games but it never really went anywhere. This new interaction between them is closure and allows Leon to evolve as a person to move on from his past.
