Was anybody else just...never scared?
Aside from the repeated jumpscare of Leon loudly falling through a wooden floor, I can't say the game so much as unnerved me at any point. And that's weird, because I've seen a lot of reviews and reactions talking about how the remake has a lot more horror than the original, and I just don't see it. Not even mister chainsaw and his chainsaw sisters inspired anything in me other than a general feeling of "I really hope I don't get instakilled and have to start this part over again." For a Resident Evil game to not be scary is a huge disappointment for me.

fear is simply subjective

It's more tense than the old game but neither is really going for scary.

Personally i find the original game's atmosphere more dark and depressing than this one, which makes it more spooky. The remake's ambience is beautiful, and has many colors that bring life to it, making it more lively and reduces the horror effect in the end.
But yeah, i was not afraid, mostly because i already had an idea of what to expect i guess, because i've played the original one. This game is more action and emotion that horror for me.

This.
Never got "scared" by any RE game. The tension in the older RE games comes from not knowing if you will make it to the typewriter alive, and the uncertainty of what threat may lie beyond the next corner.
That's not really scary, it's tension through the survival horror mechanics. When people say the remake of 4 is scarier, they mean it has more of that. The remake may not have limited saves or survival horror enemy placement but it does have more dangerous enemies and more ways things can just go wrong when you don't expect, when compared to the original. To some people that means more horror.

The village section has a creepy atmosphere to it reminiscent of the first hour or two of both RE7 and RE8, but no - it’s not really scary unless you have a low scare-tolerance, are frightened by body-horror, or suffer from anxiety caused by being overwhelmed with enemies in confined spaces.

It's a shame I don't even feel that tension.

RE4 has horror aspect. But it's not inherently a horror game.

Edit: I do appreciate the slow segments of the game though.

It's not a horror game so I don't imagine it scared too many people.

Have you played any of the Amnesia games? Worth it if you're looking for a good spook

I was pretty scared of the originals on playstation. RE4 was never that scary because it's more of an action movie. Even with Capcom removing a lot of the silly stuff its still too action focused to be that scary. Other than the Regenerator section.

The remake does have scarier moments than the first one. And you actually mentioned some of them, so clearly you agree. The jumpscare of Leon falling through stuff is mostly a remake thing, and it's even more jumpy when you played the first game and believe nothing's gonna happen here.

But RE4 isn't supposed to be peak horror, nor is resident evil in general, although 7 is definitely scarier than 4 . In fact games in general are fairly mediocre when it comes to horror, I don't know why you were expecting anything

Wow the game where the main character says cheesy one liners and god smacks monsters around is NOT scary? Huh

Re4 both og and remake are more like an aventure with cheesy stuff and some horror elements. It has some atmospheric and small scary moments but its more of an action game where you kill everything that moves with a super hero that says badass/hero stuff.

I thought 2make was definitely pretty spooky at times, especially early on in the RPD. The way the horror slowly fades as you get stronger until you feel like an action movie hero is one of the reasons I love it so much - there's a really strong sense of overcoming the impossible. 7's also pretty scary, I'd say, which makes sense since it was made to be a return to the horror roots. I think Resi Remake is also pretty scary at times (the dogs crashing through the windows will forever haunt my soul), and Village at least had the tall mommy and her weird daughters stalking you around. Oh, and the dollhouse, which is maybe the scariest sequence I've seen in the entries I've played. 3make wasn't too scary though, I'll give you that.

If you're looking for a slightly more spoopy Resi-style horror game, try Signalis. It doesn't have what I would say are really scary moments, but it's got a really strong sense of atmosphere and tone that elevates the scenes. Also, Dead Space definitely spooped me, even though it's a very action-heavy horror game. I wish Resi 4 Remake could've achieved that too.
