So the knife breaks now??
Asking, because it sounds like a pretty big deal-breaker to me, given how important that thing was in the original. Not to mention fun.

Do you have any idea what the journey is like in the remake though? If not, you'll understand why they kept the mechanic. If the knife didn't break the game would be a walk in the park just like the original.

The one hit stun, kick, knife meta is far from fun after a few runs, you're missing out on a lot if you skip on the game, besides there is an infinite knife that's quite easy and cheap to obtain.

its not really a big deal. you can repair it at every merchant, and improve its durabilty to the point where it's not really an issue. there is also a knife you can unlock which has unlimited durability.

small annoyance, but just improve durability and it wont be a big deal duder.

yeah but you can repair it and get extras. Also there's mods to make it infinite.

It breaks but you can repair it for pretty cheap at merchant. I recommend upgrading its durability first asap as it makes a huge difference. Furhter, you get a TON of mini-knives you can use up during your run, instead. THe knife for stealth purposes isn't actually hugely useful tbh and not even for parrying tbh. The biggest advantage is using it to instantly kill downed mutating humans which does not even use its dmg stat so u can just upgrade durability or use the weaker throwaway knives for this. This mechanic prevents them from morphing into the more aggressive crooked neck humans or the plaga head. As for bosses shoot them with a powerful weapon rather than using knife.

The way im looking at it is its a balance between the knife being more useful and fun to use and the way the remake is presented. Your choice to use the knife's durability in order to not get damaged or take the damage and preserve the knife durability for other things.

If your not using the knife (and not earning the unbreakable knife) your just a bad player. (or just stubborn)

yeah but you can fix it, honestly tho i never noticed the knife breaking because if it does it automatically switches to a temp knife that you picked off the ground.

It does break, but they also made it WAY better in this game.

It's no longer just something you use to finish off enemies and save yourself ammo. In RE4r you also can use it to:
  • Parry most enemy attacks (including those from bosses or strong enemies)
  • Free yourself from grabs
  • Stealth kill enemies
  • Stop some enemies from turning into plagas
So the knife isn't just a weapon anymore. It's now an offensive and defensive resource.

And tbh, the durability is only really a hindrance at the beginning of the game. After you upgrade the knife's durability a few times it'll last until the next merchant and then you can repair it.
It's easily manageable, you'll also get a ton of spare knifes that help as well. I barely ever got stuck in situations where I didn't have a knife for very long, and most of it was early game.

Late game I barely pay much attention to the knife because I have a fully upgraded knife ( outside of exclusive ) and several spares in my case. I'm about to get the second knife that you can upgrade too which will make it even more easier to manage.

If you play like in the original you don't need to parry much. If you only stab and back stab with it instead of using it to parry a chainsaw it will almost always last you until the next merchant. Plus there's enough smaller ones you can use. Consider parrying an emergency move you're not really supposed to use and try to weigh the durability-loss of a finisher against your ammo reserves.

Basically this. It's for balance purposes. Without it knife is OP
I always had a knife when I needed it.

I had like 20 knives at one point, and I was abusing the hell out of it, Pretty hard to run out as long as you do your exploration.
I just got the Combat Knife and fully upgraded Durability and most of it's Damage upgrades. I doubt I'll need more then it and the original knife now and sold all the extra knives lol.

knife was completely broken in the og, and its actually incredibly strong here, however its best to use it for critical attacks on enemies/mini bosses like dr salvador, saves tons of ammo
Yeah. But the knife also does more things.

In most parts of the game you can literally walk back to the merchant and repair your knife before continuing with the story.
