For me the best loadout and got me smooth as hell through all difficulties.
Pistols:
- Sentinel 9 / Handgun: They're almost identical and have the great crit passive which is especially great at higher difficulties as raw dmg doesn't scale as well (in fact doesn't scale at all, it is static). Sentinel 9 starts a bit stronger, has a superior ammo capacity and fire rate but its really close enough to not matter much. You don't use pistols for bosses typically so this is a point against Red 9. These take hardly any space.
Shotguns:
- W-870: Solid unlike the Striker which, imo, has such poor accuracy I can't recommend it even at fairly close range plus Riot Gun pretty much is a better alternative. I've seen space mentioned for Striker but, imo, never had an issue with it so take that for what you will. Thus its this starting shotgun or Riot Gun typically.
- Riot Gun: This is an upgrade in almost every conceivable way over the W-870 the only way it loses is the W-870 does around 5% more dmg which is basically nothing at this point for all its negatives compared to Riot Gun. This is why you will see it recommended so clearly over other weapons in its class.
Note: Both shotguns were massively boosted in their dmg compared to the original game, quite significantly at nearly double. This makes them miniature magnums due to plentiful ammo unlike Magnum ammo. They are better at boss DPS and single target dmg, breaking wooden shields, and staggering and less crowd control contrary to what you might think of a shotgun. W-870 at a distance could do some crowd control but not particularly recommended.
Rifles:
- Bolt Action rifle: Imo, after playing through a few times I consider this the superior rifle if you get skilled with it, especially for professional. It can do over 30 dmg at full upgrade making it stronger than weaker magnums and not far behind full maxed Broken Butterfly magnum while having sniper ammo which is far more common. This thing will obliterate groups of enemies with body shots and even more so headshots due to the 3x dmg (30+ dmg is reached via weakspot, otherwise its around 10 iirc). Due to penetrating its great for killing wood shield users and any targets behind them in a single shot unlike shotguns which require two shots (break shield > then another to kill). Plus lining up at least 2-3 if not 4-5 targets is fairly reasonable for group headshots and more so for body shots. Its worth taking off the scope for mid and close range encounters. This is a really good weapon for the stairs if you need to clear multiple groups in the cabin siege, or at the windows.
- Stingray Semi-Auto Rifle: A weaker but faster fire rate weapon for those who aren't hitting all their shots reliably. Can remove scope to handle multiple targets at closer range but, overall, arguably inferior to bolt action rifle. This doesn't see a boost in dmg by almost any dmg compared to original game. In fact, if you don't' hit weak point dmg is nerfed as the 3x factor is needed to reach same dmg point as this rifle in the original game unlike the bolt action rifle which has higher base dmg than OG before factoring its 3x bonus. For most cases this is still a great rifle. It is fast for regenerators and on hardcore and lower will shred. On professional it cannot always 1-shot headshots even at max dmg on normal mobs... especially as you get further in and their HP goes up. It fires fast enough that it isn't a huge loss but considering I'd honestly recommend BAR at that point. It cannot exploit lined up shots as well in professional due to increased HP as mentioned both on headshots and more importantly body shots because the dmg isn't particularly high if hitting a non-weakpoint such as the body which matters more than you might think depending on how spread the enemies are for grouping if there aren't stairs/hallways to funnel them or they're already considerably spread to begin with and you can't slant them into a line. Still, a very good rifle anyways.
I can't recommend the combat rifle due to ammo issues. I also cannot recommend any Magnum since they were nerfed quite hard in remake. Magnum BB was nerfed in dmg. Magnum ammo is even rarer unless you intentionally craft it using resources that could be spent elsewhere. Last, the dmg of the buffed Riot Gun, W-870, and Bolt Action Rifle (BAR) are boosted so much it actually further detracts from the magnums. In fact, the BAR does more dmg than Killer 7 except when it crits which no known info is determined about its crit performance yet but BAR has so much ammo by comparison. Meanwhile, Broken Butterfly simply doesn't do enough dmg above the others to really justify an entire weapon category and rare ammo for a minor increase when you can just shoot a second time with another weapon type and beat/rival it. Handcannon requirements pretty much keep it off the table. If you have it then you can beat anything and you also have infinite rocket which is even stronger. Moot discussion basically. There is yet another point against Magnums... While I originally would have recommended it for bosses after testing some things you can buy at least 3 rockets in the game and each of the bosses you would even consider a magnum on a rocket is honestly more affordable and the total cost of 3 rockets (or better yet 2 if not buying all three) is more reasonable and your exclusive tickets turn out to be better on the more practical regular use BAR + Riot Gun. Note that you cannot buy a second rocket until you have used the one you own (carry or storage). There might be a deadline to buy rockets before prior sold ones vanish so you may or may not be able to buy all three in one chapter (or even say krauser chapter buy one > buy second one may or may not be possible, but if you bought one of them in a prior chapter than you definitely can in the krauser example after you've used the one up at any point in that or prior chapter).
SMG:
- TMP and LE5 are both good but I consider them more "extra". They have some forced ammo drops/placements where you can use them but I don't actively carry them, myself, as it would make more ammo drop for them I prefer for other weapons. LE5 is, in theory, insanely ammo efficient due to its penetration and sheer number of rounds crafted and dmg per round compared to any pistol but I've not tested it and it would only really matter in NG+ due to when you get it being so late... TMP is solid and, imo, good for staggering and killing special mobs like chainsaw/bull but not necessary.
Bolt Gun:
- Sucks for saving ammo due to how ammo drop RNG works. Poor dmg, too. Can be used to break lights in island map without making noise. Mines, however, are very powerful. There are several boss encounters that can be trivialized if not instantly won with proper pre-fight mine placement before cutscene such as chainsaw sisters and mendez. Mines also make no noise but do more dmg so if you wanted to stealth island section for "fun" then you can literally blow people up with it as long as first shot kills them (shoot a bolt after if you think they have too much HP before they can get up, but usually it kills them in 1 go even on pro).
I went Blacktail for pistols, slightly less damaging red 9 with better stats and inventory space all around. The most "balanced" to me, on top of packing a punch.
Riot gun for shotgun, absolutely no SMG, butterfly vs killer7 really depends on how accurate you think you are with the broken butterfly,
I'm a bolt-action nerd so SR over Stingray, but if you don't plan on using the exclusive upgrade early stingray is probably much better, especially for regeneradores
I feel like every weapon can be made useful and none of the guns I've used so far really could be considered "Trash Tier" it feels like every gun in this game becomes good.
I think the best loadout I had was the blacktail, m1903, striker and killer 7. I could swap the striker out with a riot shotgun but this loadout here was saving maximum inventory space.
The Red9 is probably the best pistol for dealing total damage but I just started liking the blacktail better because the firerate is really good and it's a 2x2 and the Red9 just takes up so much space in the inventory with the stock and everything. I think I had the most fun using the SG-09 with the laser sight the crit chance isn't as good as it was in the original RE4 but it's still a fun gun to use.
For rifles I used to think the stingray was the best but after fully upgrading the m1903 it just feels really weak in comparison. I guess if you aren't that good of a shot you should use the stingray for the firerate capability but the M1903 almost feels like a magnum when it's fully upgraded. For shotguns atm I'm kind of torn between the striker and the riot shotgun. I feel like the striker is better for pulling out in a flash when you get mobbed and mowing down 2-3 enemies instantly but the Riot Shotgun is way more precise has alot more range and feels more useful against bosses. I was popping Saddler's eyes with the Riot Shotgun with ease and the spread on the striker would just make it useless for this task.
As some have pointed out though, pretty much every weapon in the game is balanced and viable for endgame when fully-upgraded. Even the starting pistol's exclusive upgrade is great with 5x critical rate. Also you get 95% of your upgrade costs refunded if you choose to sell a weapon, and can also buy the weapon back without upgrades from the merchant later if you choose, so the game encourages you to upgrade as you like and experiment a bit.
Your knife's durability should be your top priority. If you're efficient with your parries nothing can touch you.
Riot gun does a lot of damage and is my favourite shotgun to use.
I love Smg's so TMP or LE5 are good fun picks.
For comparison and my take on it:
Riot Gun (Shotgun) - 19.2 dmg
SR M1903 (Bolt Action Rifle) - 31.8 dmg
Broken Butterfly (Magnum) - 40.5 dmg
Killer7 (Magnum) - 28 dmg (unknown crit factors)
The Killer7 is outright beaten by BAR at the cost of a bit worse fire rate (frankly almost totally irrelevant for applied situations) and the Riot Gun isn't far behind but shoots quite fast. Both guns have vastly more ammo and are more efficient uses of your ptas and more importantly the exclusive upgrade ticket. Killer7 is also acquired quite late and expensive to upgrade nor worth an exclusive ticket when there are only two and two weapons clearly better. Killer7 could be considered IF you opt for Stingray over BAR as your preferred choice of rifle if you simply don't like BAR. Sadly, we know little about what its crit rate is or how big the crit dmg multiplier is, but with such scarce ammo and most targets popping in 1-2 hits anyways from it this crit passive is actually of totally questionable value.
Broken Butterfly has a horrible reticle unlike Killer7's laser, but I admit almost any case you would use it in has you being quite close so missing is not probable. Still worth mention. Fire rate and ammo are clearly not strong points for this weapon, either. Riot Gun can put out comparable "DPS" even though its less dmg per hit. BAR has dmg that isn't horribly behind (it would be like saying Killer7's even weaker dmg is trash compared to BB if someone disagreed) but supports close and mid range while also, obviously, being applicable to long range (ideally with scope here and this is the whole unscope issue, though you can change setting to keep zoom level if you wanted...). Overall, BB simply isn't a clear upgrade or even worth the extra ptas/exclusive ticket to pick over a Riot Gun and BAR.
Riot Gun and Bar can also rip apart chainsaw sisters, garrador (like 10-20s double garrador boss fight easy even on pro), etc. For Mendez the best option is honestly just using the mines to instantly skip phase 1 and almost instantly end phase 2 setting mines on floor + beam. Mines also instant kill chainsaw sisters but you could also just grenade/flash and Riot Gun them in seconds.
SG pistol, simply the best pistol for professional, crit = instakill, you can even one shot plagas, pair it with laser, now, many people don't know this, but laser acts as if you were standing still aiming for a while, the crosshair gets centered, and you have an increased crit chance, with the laser you ALWAYS have this increased chance, on top of that, its final upgrade increases the crit chance x5.
Riot gun: This and the SG are the MVP of my S+ runs, I use it to blast enemies and keep running, most of the times you'll just run past them, and the fire rate of this and range allows you to make a path easily.
Stingray: Best overall sniper, it's weaker but it doesn't matter since you'll one shot anyone in the head anyways, I never upgraded it during my run, just the base stats are more than enough, plus it's the best one to kill the regenerator with the wrench (the only regenerator you have to kill, you can avoid the iron maiden one that ambushes afterwards if you're fast enough to open the door with ashley)
These are the only weapons you'll ever need, or you can do a "dirty S+ run" and use Chicago or handcannon, you can get these and unlock infinite ammo by the time you get to the castle.
