Re village takes place years after Resident evil 4
Village is 8, and it isnt a remake, its the sequel to 7.
RE1 does have a remake on Steam as well, theres even a 0 game.
RE1 was remade. People call it a Remaster because the Remake came out on GameCube and the PC version is an HD remaster of that because the GC only had a 640x480 resolution or something like that for CRT TVs. The original came out for PS1 in the 90s. The newer version features elements cut from the original, significantly more detailed graphics and more strategic gameplay.
RE 1
RE Zero (essentially a full length story DLC for RE 1)
RE2 Remake
RE3 Remake
RE Code: Veronica (but it's very old, be warned)
RE 4 Remake
RE 5
RE Revelations
RE Revelations 2
RE 6 (but be warned it's very ungood)
RE 7
Re 8
That should give you the story, roughly in order up to the present.
If you have the stomach for it the RE1 remake (released as HD Remaster on Steam) is the most pure example of a survival horror I can think of, and a good place to start if you want to have a strong understanding of the genre. Lots of people find it hard to get into though because of the fixed camera angles and controls, in that case it's not a big deal to start with RE2 Remake, which carries a lot of that survival horror spirit but with modern gameplay.
RE4 is just incredible, the original I mean. And the remake doesn't replace it, so you can play both no problem too. Outside RE1, RE2R, RE4 and RE4R, I find the franchise very hit or miss, these are truly the best games of the bunch IMO. I liked RE7 and RE8 but found both to be very unenjoyable to replay for some reason, they don't have the same pull as the 4 games I mentioned.
That's just my opinion though.
There are few more RE games, like the on-rails shooters, but I didn't list those because they aren't available on the PC.
I made exception with Code Veronica though, because there are rumors that Capcom is going to remake it at some point.
There are no rumors, but people wanting it to be true for some weird reason on this forum
For someone new to the series who just wants to focus on the remakes and new games:
-RE1 remake (originally came out on the GameCube but has been HD'ified and is on Steam and consoles. I think it's simply called Resident Evil HD now.
-RE2 remake
-RE3 remake
-RE4 remake
-RE7
-RE Village
RE7 and RE Village are their own little stories, but they tie into the main games and come after RE 4,5, and 6 I think.
Given the huge success of all three remakes and the fact that Code Veronica is the only mainline not on PC in some form, it's highly likely that's what they're working on now.
What would make sense is that they have two teams working on remakes (we know they have had that at least at some point because of the 2/3 remakes being made in tandem). If they want to keep the release cadence up and keep the hype rolling for 5-6 years something like this makes sense:
4 remake has been released so the 4 remake team goes on to 5. The other team is already working on CV.
CV releases and that team goes on to remake 1.
5 releases and the 4/5 team goes on to work on zero.
At some point they try to make a decent online game, like a remake of Outbreak (this is wishful thinking on my part. Their online games are almost universally garbage cash grabs farmed out to inexperienced, underpaid studios)
Revelations are both too new to warrant a remake for the foreseeable future. The same goes for 6. Though 6 was pretty bad so maybe they'll remake it as a good game?
REmake 1
REmake 3 until Jill passes out
REmake 2 both scenarios
Continue REmake 3
REmake 4
1 and Zero tie two stories happening at the same time together in a really nice way. 2 and 3 do the same thing.
They really should be seen as two parts of a single story.
