What's the use of the weapon's system?

Just finished the game and managed to unlock all of the weapons. As far as I could tell there isn't a way to pick out your weapons. Most of the times you'd begin the new level with whichever weapons you had on the previous one. Yet, there were a few missions in which you began with a handgun which differed from whatever you had before.

Anyways, I'm assuming that there isn't a way to switch inbetween unlocked weapons? I mean, you can switch guns by finding them on the level but there isn't an inventory that you can access and go to switch weapons. There were times at which I really wanted to switch to the quickshot but none were around. What I'm trying to say is, what's the point of unlocking weapons if you can't switch between them freely. Also, why waste points to unlock "legendary" weapons if you can always find them laying around? Or do such weapons dont show up unless you have unlocked them? I doubt it. I'm quite sure that I came across a few legendary handguns prior to unlocking them.

The only way I saw was to pick up the guns during the levels. And a lot of the levels had that option, but not for all gun types and not all levels. I did feel the amount of time spent using my unlocked weapons didn't feel like I wasted the points. And I don't think you come across the unlocked weapons until you unlock them, it upgrades the normal weapons in the level to the legendary of that type it seemed to me. Like after I unlocked the silver shotgun every shotgun I found in a level was the silver shotfun.

Maybe, I did see a lot of legendary stuff laying around on the last few chapters. I had all the weapons unlocked by then.

Do you think that legendary weapons make a difference? I didn't notice much of a difference since I was going to hs most of the times. I used the quickshooters throughout most of the game. The only circumtances under which I had to toss them aside and switch to the rifle were: face to face firefights with bosses and at long range where it took 3+ shots to actually score a hs.

I noticed a big difference with the silver shotgun for range at least. Especially once I unlocked the no reloading when in focus mode or whatever it's called. Otherwise it just seems like a bonus to whatever weapons I was using that wasn't terribly noticeable.
