EDIT: Also, shoot things in between so you keep your combo meter up, like chickens or barrels or pumpkins, that kinda stuff.
I'm not an expert on the scoring system, all I did was to aim for the head most of the time, always keep moving forward, activate concentration once you're in danger of loosing your combo in order to find new targets and use objects (like exploding barrels) to keep your combo alive.
Play the levels a few times until you know where the enemies will attack you on your way through the level. That way you'll know when to use concentration in order to "bridge a gap" between two groups of enemies to prevent loosing your combo. At least that's how I do it on certain stages: No enemies/pumpkins to shoot: Sprint towards next group while using concentration.
To get higher scores, try to do headshots and/or trickshots. Killing a running guy with a long-range headshot while you're nearly dead ("last breath") will give a lot more points than simply shooting him in the gut from medium range. You also might want to earn all the arcade-abilities first before going after a highscore. For example: "Executioner" (automatic headshots in concentration) makes it far easier to get good scores on that canyon-level.
Trapper and Ranger are the best choices. Gunslinger sucks.
