Sorry for the black bars, it was our idea to give an "old movie" feel to it. Turns out it doesn't work this way on people nowadays :). Funny enough, developers fall into this trap from time to time, e.g. The Evil Within also initially featured movie-like letterbox, only to allow disabling it after players protests.
The first thing I did when I got the game was spend a good 30 minutes finding out how to remove the black bars and set the FOV to a higher value. And as can be seen, I am not the only one (you added the options to begin with due to protests, if I am not mistaken?).
So I wonder, why not add these options to the options menu?
If it turns out that it's hard to implement due to changes having to be made to the menu, why not give users clear directions on how to change them? Right now, the file that has to be changed is burried in a hidden folder, and the instructions within it are not exactly clear.
Personally, I would atleast suggest a sticky post on the matter, so that people can easily find how to change these settings.
Anyway, after that critisism, let me just say that I love the game. The gunplay is great.
For the FOV, the game assets and animation system weren't unfortunately prepared up-front with variable FOV in mind. Thus changing the FOV might result in certain visual glitches. By then, we didn't feel good about legitimizing glitches by having an in-game setting that would lead to them. Convoluted, yes, but I hope it's understandable :)
Also for both FOV and the other values it was problematic to apply such settings with the game running. While not unfeasible, It was far from easy on that tech.
Note that the next version of the engine had these things improved (following Gunslinger's experiences and your feedback, dear Gunslinger players) and lo and behold, you can actually use FOV slider in Dying Light today.
I have been experiencing shadows disappearing when on the edges of the screen when playing with a FOV of 110, so I understand what sort of visual glitches you are speaking of.
Thanks for the quick response, I appreciate it!
Also, to the Techland developer, This game and Dying Light are some of my favorite games
