Industrialist and Fencer are the best for bosses, no doubt about that. Though you don't start with them.
But it's really just personal preference. Find a character you like and play him; none of them are bad. They're all good at something.
For example I play Iceskimo, and people say he's garbage compared to the blue knight because his splash magic isn't nuts like the blue knight's. Too bad the blue knight's magic does nothing to end-game enemies, and iceskimo is just normal damage (except his splash).
Blue freezes enemies, which is awesome;
Orange has fire Dot(long but weak);
Pink's splash has multiple hits, even on normal enemies;
Purple's projectile LOOKS AWESOME!;
Barbarian has a fast and good damaging splash;
Theif's kinda plain;
Bear has a tornado;
Conehead got good starting weapon;
Ninja is just generally awesome;
Saracen's projectile thows enemies up and knocks them down;
Brute and Snakey both have good starter weapons and are the only two to have nature magic;
Skeleton and Cultist both have dark magic;
Stoveface has an excellent starter weapon for you if you're not the mage type;
Eskimo has ice powers, but with a plain magic which means you can magically fight cultists
Gray 2's like theif, but a with stupid starter;
Gray is... ok, I guess...
Hope that helped!
Iceskimo starting out does great juggle damage because of the fishing spear, and his ice magic will do great for freezing enemies.
Gray knight's magic is non-elemental, making it normally effective against everything in the game. The bomb magic they use can save a lot of money instead of buying bombs, but I still reccommend buying a few for Icy arena if you're looking towards getting Iceskimo since the trap combo they use on you can be devastating no matter what level.
Hopefully this helps (`u`)
