It appears that Steam was down for several hours on August 24th. This may have caused the network issues you all were experiencing. At your convenience, can everybody try doing an online multiplayer session and let us know if it's working?
Hello, thank you very much for your reply.
I unfortunately forgot to report this earlier, sorry about that: so, yesterday (25th) I tried with my friend to make an online session again. We did not play for more than a couple of minutes since we just tested the lobby, joining and starting the game, but in any case on this second test everything worked out as expected and we were able to join each other fine and start a co-op game together.
No setting was changed compared to the test from the previous day, when the connection did not work, either, so I'm inclined to believe that it was indeed related to the Steam outage on the 24th and not a problem on our end.
I would recommend the others to try again as well!
I am still encountering this issue. Twice in the two times I've tried to play with my friends (Aug 27 and Sept 4 from 8-9pm EST) on steam. We tried multiple attempts to no avail, including restarting CC. The most we could get into a lobby together was 2 people and after that no one else could join (Even if someone was in the lobby a minute ago). The host typically saw someone enter the lobby and leave immediately, while that person just saw the "Searching for game" for 15sec or longer before it told us the game was no longer available.
Sorry to hear that you and your friends were experiencing problems trying to play online multiplayer together. Our game uses peer-to-peer for it's online multiplayer sessions and we use Steam's matchmaking system for matches. Typically, having the host directly invite other players into their session works best. But problems still may occur if the host or clients don't have very fast network speeds or have less than reliable connections.
Here is a Steam support page about required open ports that may help with the problem:
