Sorry to hear that you are having trouble booting Castle Crashers on Steam. We just have a few questions for you that may help us find out what the problem may be.
Are you playing on Windows PC or MacOS?
Do you get an error code after the game fails to boot?
If not, when you get the black screen do you hear any audio?
Do you have any special characters, custom fonts or emojis in your Steam username? (If you do, please try and remove them, as we've had reports of this causing crashes)
Are you playing with any Bluetooth devices connected to your PC? (If you do, please try and remove them, as we've had reports of this causing crashes)
Are you playing with your keyboard language set to Chinese? (If you do, please try and change it to English and see if that helps)
Here are a few things that you can do that may fix the problem.
Make sure that all your operating system and graphics card drivers are fully up to date.
Verify the integrity of the files.
If you have anti-virus software, check to make sure it's not quarantining any important files that Castle Crashers needs.
You may be booting the game into a resolution not supported by the game. If so, you can force the game to open in windowed mode:
1. In the Steam client, navigate to the Games tab
2. Right click on "Castle Crashers" from the game list, then select the "Properties" menu option
3. Under the "General" tab, click the "Set Launch Options" button
4. Copy-paste the following into the box:
-window
This will force the game to launch in windowed mode.
Set the correct resolution for your monitor in-game, under Help and Options > Game Settings > Resolution.
You can also swap to Fullscreen mode here too, but be sure to go back and delete:
-window
from the launch options box later, or you'll have to change your settings every time you boot.
One more thing, we've had some reports that Razer Cortex and/or Razer Synapse, can cause a black Main Menu screen and a subsequent black screen when trying to play, so please try to completely shut down these programs, by exiting them from the Windows taskbar.
Once you do that please try and boot Castle Crashers and see if that fixes the issue.
