Red Demon, Orange Knight, Green knight - secondary choise thanks to their magic does dmg overtime, especially on Green knight (but green knight has unqiue a bit awkward strong attack)
Blue knight and lesser extend Icekimo - freeze enemies which can be quite helpful and strong for crowd control, but not very effective against most of bosses
Gray knight, Chainface knight, Conehead - have most powerfull missile (bomb magic), which can hit multiple enemies at once, but have meh splash magic
Red knight is good but you have to position yourself very well, so diagonal enemies don't hit you. I think nowdays it's believed that ice characters are better then sawblades, but I didn't check tier lists in a while.
Also if you're stuck, add me, I can help you beat insane.
Just like with poison there is some enemies who are ressistant to fire.
Red knight Lightning require positioning, but once enemies caught in his lightning they are stunlocked. Anyone who cross the lightning beam will meet same fate

Melee is meta so green knight is and always will be THE worst character to play insane mode with.
If a diagonal enemy moves fast enough there's 50/50 chance they can run through the lightning without getting stunned because they are on 1 side on 1 frame and the other side on the next frame, so they don't get stunlocked.
I have 2000+ hours in the game, so mostly personal experience yeah. It's not impossible to do well with green knight, but new players should keep well away from him, he's just not that good. I mean, the guy says he's struggling to beat industrial, what the hell is green gonna do for him? He needs ice or sawblades wheelchair or something. Or a juggling guide at the very least.
If it happens to be Industrialist or Fencer, then you're probably gonna want to keep in mind that their splash attacks are only so ridiculously strong against enemies that you can hit as many times in quick succession as you want (so most bosses that aren't actually difficult are vulnerable, but generic enemies will only take one or two small hits; beefies are a sort of middle ground since they'll be knocked down after every fourth hit they take). If you can only hit them once per splash attack, it's mostly only useful due to its defensive properties (it'll defend you not only from the front, but also a little bit from the back). That doesn't mean it's useless, though; I pretty much needed it to get past the skeleton horde in Lava World
The main disadvantage of playing alone is that for whatever reason, you can only get your character to consume potions automatically when they'd otherwise run out of HP in multiplayer mode, and even then only as long as someone else is still standing
You can mitigate the issue by raising your defense stat. However, even when you've maxed it out, you're still vulnerable to being stunlocked to death in a blink of an eye if you jump between two or more enemies (if you've been killed during the Troll Mother boss fight, you probably know what I mean by that), so you'll have to be careful no matter what you do
I recommend red knight, if you're still trying. Most bosses in insane mode don't actually get a boost to HP or damage. The hard part is really the mobs, and industrialist/fencer are really only good at killing bosses. They can knock down more enemies than most magics, but... still.
Red knight can cheese it with his lightning magic to some degree by stunlocking without juggling. Juggling is probably the best, though.
Bi-Polar bear or the pig are probably going to be your best orb buddies. Golden skull mace, assuming you've filled your strength bar, is going to be the best melee weapon.

(incoming chip on shoulder people I'm willing to bet)
Here's a guide I made for how to make do before you're perfect at juggling.
