If that's so, close the game, open a Public lobby and try to invite your friends from there.
When you start a multiplayer game in Castle Crashers it asks you if you want it Public (anyone can join in) or Private (only friends or people you invite can).
Choose the Public option insteaed of the Private one.
Maybe the VPN could be the source of the problem too, but I'm not sure how.
but the vpn worked tho
Considering that Castle Crashers' multiplayer does not use a server system but a Peer2Peer connection, is not too unlikely that the VPN is literally blocking the communication because the Peer2Peer, to properly work, needs a lower security measure.
I might be horribly wrong since I'm no expert in this but, if I were you, I would check if the VPN doesn't have some kind of firewall too, like a strict NATNEG function or some stuff like that.
Castle Crashers has it's fair number of connectivity problems, but this time I doubt that it's the game's fault.
If checking the VPN doesn't bring anything to the table, then I suggest you to ask for a support ticket on The Behemoth's support page.[support.thebehemoth.com]
