Fast character unlocking: Does it work?

If I played co-op with a friend using a lvl 1 blue knight while he uses his lvl 99 with a complete map and we just go beat the final boss, do I unlock the industrialist?

Nope. You must beat the the whole game. However, you can skip levels as explained in this guide:

Oh, ok thanks. I want to get the fencer and it's really annoying having to go though the whole game again twice. Now I'll know to do just the key stages.
