Can you play Castle Crashers online with friends?

I'm thinking of getting this game to play with my friends, but I'm not sure if Castle Crashers supports multiplayer (to invite like 1-3 friends over Steam to play the campaign). I don't want to spend $30 on games if I cannot even play it with my friend(s)!
