Ronimo Games, the developer, went bankrupt and they had to shut their servers down. Now Awesomenauts is owned by Atari, and for now so players can still play the game they've reverted to the oldest version that still supported Steam matchmaking.
They have promised to bring the game back to its latest update slowly as they reimplement and recode some of the underlying Galactron code, and have said they will eventually release a Beta to test these changes.

Nothing is new. Game reverted back to an older version to play on steam servers.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Do they plan on doing anything with the game/ip or just get it to be usable then move on?
They do, but it's been very slow apparently.

From my understanding the game was held together with tape, sweat, and bits of spit. the fact they mentioned how things where happening they had no idea what was going on back before the shutdown kinda supports that theory as well. but the language from the most recent update seems to positivitly reflect the atari aquisition and their efforts to make it less shoddy scaffolding and more easily maintained foundation seems to be a good direction.
It kinda scares me a little bit that there are no news for the past 2 months. No beta for the updated version or anything at all.

Be grateful you have the version you got now at least.

There are games going all day/night long, wait time may vary though but rarely exceeding 5 minutes.

Theres's also that website, https://nautslobbies.com, to join a specific lobby.

You can add players too as friends or join one of the many discord servers dedicated to the game.
