vsync issues, stuttering
Hello guys.

I have a problem with vsync option in that game. When that option is not active, sscreen tearing is unbearable and the game is unplaybale for me. When vsync is set to 'on', refresh rate within the game is locked at 59Hz, despite the fact my desktop resolution is set at 1680x1050@60Hz (this is my native resolution). As a result, 'Snapshot' is micro-stuttering every second or so. Changing resolution for the game or running it in window mode doesn't help. I've tried tricks with d3doverrider and afterburner, which help me to get rid of stuttering in most similar cases, but no luck this time. What's more strange, even, when I set my desktop resolution at 1280x1024@75Hz, then run game and change resolution in game's option to 1280x1024, screen refresh rate is still locked at 59Hz. Is that value fixed in some configuration file? Is it possible to change it? Or maybe there is some other way to play 'Snapshot' at constant 60 fps, without any stuttering?

Win7 PRO 64, GTX680, 310.33 drivers and DELL 2209WA here.

Thanks in advance for any help.

my problem is v-sync doesn't even do ♥♥♥♥ for me. screen tearing is equally as bad with it on or off.

Tried forcing v-sync with d3doverrider and the catalyst control center.
Of course neither actually worked.
Also tried changing my refresh rate to 59 to see if that'd do anything.
nope.

The screen tearing is so bad it gives me a headache to look at. I can't play this game like that.

It's been out for a while now so I hope it won't be this way forever... I've lost money to unplayable games too many times.
I'll tell you what, definitely going to try games before buying them much more often....

I was really looking forward to playing it too :(
Hope there's a solution..

edit: also have my fps capped to 59 when v-sync is on. could be the source of both our problems. I've never seen a game cap at 59 rather than 60 on a 60hz monitor.

Howdy,

The vsync option was just added this past week, and we didn't see any issues when we were testing. It'd help if either of you could email me at dave@retroaffect.com and then we can actually look at what's causing this.

Also, I've never used d3doverrider, but Snapshot doesn't use Direct3d. All of our rendering is done with OpenGL, so it might not do anything for you.

I also see screen tearing with vsync on, but a lot less than with it disabled. Might be the 59fps cap is causing it.

Hey Guys,

We're still looking into what's causing this and will let you know what we find out.

Hello Dave.

Thank you very much for your support.

From my point of view, the most strange thing is the fact, that your game seems to be capped at 59 fps. And that's, as I assume, the source of all problems with stuttering.

I hope that you will find solution to our problem soon!

VSYNC isn't working for me either. Maybe it works on some systems, but the feature is clearly broken, needs to be fixed.

Hey Guys,

We're still looking into what's causing the issue. Once we know what it is and have a fix, we'll post an update.

Thanks,
-Dave

Hey. Might have some information that can help you.
Turning full screen off makes v-sync work for me just fine with any resolution I pick.

No screen-tearing at all when in windowed mode.

For everyone else, if you wish to play in full-screen without screen tearing then fortunately there's a solution. Borderless windowed mode. Looks the exact same as full screen but is windowed. Some people prefer this for the conveniences of windowed mode without losing the full screen picture.

Snapshot works great with ShiftWindow.
http://grismar.net/shiftwindow/

Run Snapshot. Open ShiftWindow.
Put checkmarks in the "Window" sections options and select Snapshot. In the "Shift to" section put a check in the coordinates as well as the "set client size area" and then put in your resolution. Hitting "grab" might get what you want for you.
Put anything you want for the rule name like oh.. maybe Snapshot?
Select "trigger it"

Bam.

For those of us who prefer borderless windows this is great and for all the people that want to play the game in full screen without screen-tearing then this will do the job as well.

Great to finally get to play the game :D

I play this game through GOG, not Steam, and I have had the same problem with tearing in fullscreen, both with v-sync on and off.

I just tried windowed mode as you suggested here and it worked for me to. The tearing stopped. Both with vsync on and off. Unfortunately, the game started to lag badly when I changed to windowed mode. I had to lower my resolution to a 1152x720 box to get rid of the lag. But I rather play in a windowed 1152x720 resolution then with the bad tearing I experienced in fullscreen.

I have Windows 7 and ATI Radeon HD4850 with the latest drivers from the Steam "Check for Video Driver" utility.

Agreed. Dunno' why you're getting lag in windowed though. guess it could be another issue D:

For me the game runs at 30fps, doesn't matter if I enable V-Sync or not. Movement is very jerky and stuttery, unplayable.

Also, in the continue screen my custom controls don't work, I have to use the default WASD. And when I enter the continue door, the game screen minimizes and pops back up again really fast.

AMD Phenom II X4 970 (3.5GHz)
AMD HD6870 (Catalyst 12.8)
4GB DDR3 RAM
Win7 x64 Pro SP1

EDIT: When I open it in Windowed mode, it runs normally, fast and responsive. But if I switch it to fullscreen and enable V-Sync, it goes back to 30fps. After that, nothing else I do brings it back to full speed, I have to restart the game (in windowed mode).

I'm also facing the same issue, but there is a quirk, the logos game launch and level select are running fine but shortly after starting to move around the level (could be a minute or so), the framerate takes a nosedive from 59 fps to 30 and it starts stuttering, makes getting the time attack medals more difficult. I really wanted to play this game and finally bought it, please fix this issue, it looks like something concerning how the refresh rate is being handled, also 59 fps can cause issues with some hdtvs, with mine it was running fine until the sudden fps drops in the same areas where the level was running fine. Basically, once the framerate drops it stays that way and is jerky until the game is restarted.

EDIT: Ok, after some more experimentation (aka playing the game :) ), I've found out that the game's framerate can drop anywhere, even when standing still such as the new game/continue screen BUT can also momentarily go up again and very quickly going back down to 30 fps. My graphics card is and ATI HD5730M btw.

I have exactly the same problem. The game runs fine for a minute or so and then goes to a constant 30 fps (with vsync enabled or disabled). Actually, yesterday when I got the game, I could play the first 3 levels at 60 fps without problems, and then it was when it started running at 30 fps.

My specs:

i5 3570k
HD6950 2GB
8 GB of RAM
Win 7 x64 SP1

Does it run fine when windowed for you guys too?

I'd suggest the dev add a fake fullscreen option (borderless window) if the problem is too hard to fix for whatever reason.
In fact many games use the fake fullscreen approach nowadays...

In my case, windowed mode or not - I'm getting stuttering movement all the time. Actually, I think it is even worse in windowed mode.
