I've done everything in that post, deleted everything, and tried again a few times. Nothing has worked at all. Still crashes with "Max Payne 3 Has Stopped Working" error.
This worked for me , my pc crashed about 8 times when installing the game though but runs ok now its installed.
I went to this link[support.rockstargames.com] that was already posted above
and following the links completely solved my launching issues. this is what I did in this order, in case you're troubleshooting and don't get the same results in the steps i went through (for thoroughness)...
1. installed rockstar social club[patches.rockstargames.com]
2. tried relaunching the game, still froze
3. disabled .NET 4.0 by going to administrative tools > services > Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0....X64 and right-clicked > properties and changed the startup type to "disabled". I did the same for the X86 version although that probably wasn't relevant.
4. tried relaunching the game, still froze
5. then tried downloading .NET 3.5 from here[www.microsoft.com] and it kept trying to unpack but wouldn't startup
6. found the .NET Framework repair tool[go.microsoft.com] and ran that
7. Then I reran the .NET 3.5 install from step #4. this time it started working but at the end it had an error and said "this setting needs to be changed from the "turn windows features on or off" in the control panel
8. went to control panel > programs > clicked 'turn windows features on or off'' underneath the programs and features menu. takes a few seconds to start up.
9. I saw that Windows .NET Framework 3.5.1 was already there but is only partially enabled. I checked the two boxes under that option so that the .NET Framework 3.5.1 box has a checkmark in it (instead of a solid square). hit ok to exit.
10. started up max payne 3 and it worked! social club started up fine, activated the game. DX11 is available and working, but turned vsync off to improve mouse movement.
I'm guessing the combination of disabling .NET 4.0 and renabling 3.5.1 in the options is what did it or if the repair tool from step #6 is what fixed it. If you're not having luck with just enabling the options in the control panel or it doesn't show up there, then i'd suggest going through with the .NET repair and then if needed, 3.5 install. if you have to reinstall .NET 3.5.1, then make sure to also do the .NET 3.5 SP1 update[support.microsoft.com]
For reference I'm running the following:
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Core 2 Quad Q9550
Sapphire Radeon HD6850 - DX11
8GB RAM
But just now I came across the Home button on the keyboard in frustration, and the social club came up and I could sign in and type product key. (this was before I press enter or start, dont' know if that's important)
However after signing in I just pressed start on my controller and the game launched!!! :D
