I was playing fine through my 5.1 speaker setup, all audio worked fine, cutscene voices were perfect.
When I plugged in my TurtleBeach DSS dolby simulation box so I could try out some 5.1/7.1 through my headphones, all the game audio appeared to be fine also. However, when I came across a cutscene, the character voices were ridiculously quiet, and could be heard faintly reverberating in the background. Max's narration came out loud and clear.
Upon further investigation (with no solution :( ) it seems the cutscenes do not use Dolby Digital compatible audio. The headphone DSS box connects via optical, which can only transmit 2 channel, dolby digital, or DTS. The DSS doesn't work with DTS. So during cutscenes, I'm asuming the game transmits something that isn't dolby digital, my DSS receiver then plays only the channels it receives, with the centre voice channel being left out.
Possible solutions are then:
- Switch to stereo audio.
- Enable DTS in windows sound device properties, supported formats.
- Buy a new soundcard/headphone processor?
- Firebomb Rockstar for being inconsistent.
Voice volume is extremely loud and there are no settings in audio options to adjust it individually, except to lower SFX volume since voice volume is tied to it.
But doing that also lowers non-voiced sound effects such as gunshots, etc. That is stupid to put voice and sound effects volumes into one setting.
The BGM and SFX volume are perfect for me. I just need to lower voice volume only.
