The gameplay's pretty solid, though. It does an adequate job of making you feel like a pro so I appreciate that at least. Graphics and performance are excellent as well.
It's definitely worth the 4 dollars of entry.
I don't agree with the politics 'all rich people are evil.' but this is fictional, and I try and not take such stuff too seriously.
I purchased the base game. I don't care to play MP, so I didn't think I needed the dlc.
I have Max Payne and Max Payne 2 as well. Should I play them before Max Payne 3?
I wrote a negative review but it does not show. As a matter of fact there is not a single negative review shown for Max Payne 3. Coincidence?
Anyway, here is what I wrote in the review, hope it helps:
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this game to true fans of Max Payne 1 and 2. Game has lost its dark tone -- you no longer feel like you are alone against the world "thanks" to "helpfull" non-player characters literally bossing you through an excessively cinematic-driven story, linear play, no save ability, sparse checkpoints, and enemy AI which can sometimes make you swear even on Easy difficulty.
To top it off, you have to register for Rockstar Social Club, tie that registration to your Steam account, and log in every time -- even to play a single-player game.
As a long-time fan of Max Payne 1 and Max Payne 2 games, I am severely disappointed with this consolized, multi-playerized, half-arsed game.
Thanks to Valve and their amazing discounts at least I did not burn too much money, but if I knew how bad the game is beforehand (my bad, should have done my homework), I wouldn't have purchased it even at that price point because it is just not worth that much.
If you were a fan of noir and trippy atmosphere in the prequels, better save your money and your memory of Max instead of insulting yourself with this garbage.
I seriously don't understand the hat for this game. Yes it is different from MP1 and 2, but hey what did you expect? It is not developed by Remedy any more. This game feels a lot more like Rockstar game meaning it's famous for its action/movie style dialogues and scenes. Still the game is one hell of a ride and deals with a lot of modern social issues. It's just not personal anymore meaning not all about Max Payne.
And about the R* social club yes it sucks but I (and 30 or so more people in our group) don't have any issue with it. Is it bad? Yes because even if the game is on Steam, R* uses its own DRM (so you get double DRM). Is it broken completely? No because you are able to play after registering the game. But you have to manage friends, game invites etc via R* social club and sadly not via Steam itself.
But if you can buy the complete pack because it's cheap as hell and you get some really fun online modes/maps. BE AWARE THAT STEAM HAS RAN OUT OF KEYS. So you have to wait to play this game!!!!
Also join our group if you want :p

The Rockstar DRM is a nuisance but it works. The real problem is enabling DX11. After a google search I've found that you have to launch the game with this line (launch options in properties):
-dx11 -adapter 3
Simply using the DX11 setting in game won't work.
HK-47 is wrong. This game does in fact have a dark tone. In fact, it's *too* dark, darker than even the first two games. Characters die left and right with little development and Max himself constantly talks about how much of a piece of ♥♥♥♥ he is. The game is more than willing to throw the worst that Sao Paulo has in store for us at every opportunity, from the poor people in the slums to the nasty people that you face in battle. Eventually, it just becomes a nonstop cavalcade of grimness, and it's hard to root for anybody.
Unless by "dark tone," he meant "the setting isn't set in nighttime NYC anymore." In which case, he might be correct.
At least the first two games had some humor in it, enough to create some genuinely funny moments that lighten up the situation a bit (Max's second nightmare sequence in the first game, for example). And at least in those games, Max spent less time ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and moaning about himself and more time focusing on the situation at hand.
All in all, this is NOT good for MP fans. All the problems with its tone combined with the long, nigh unskippable cutscenes with weird-ass effects makes it bad for all of them.
