Revisiting Max Payne 3: Time to let go of my grudge.

It's been a long while since I've played MP3. And from what I remember, the gameplay was a downgrade and the story and writing were terrible.
Well... I had grown old. I figured I should revisit it and give it a second chance. And... Yes, the story and writing are the worst of the trilogy. But despite that, and the fact that it IS the weakest of the three, I think I was too harsh on Max Payne 3. In fact, I found myself having a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of fun with it on this new go around.

Yes, the gameplay is a downgrade from 1 & 2: It's built to be a gritty semi-realistic tactics-meets-power third person shooter as opposed to the heroic bloodshed bullet-time power fantasy of Remedy's entries. But it actually does a pretty good job of being a semi-realistic shooter. The weapons are so much fun to use, the bullet-time and shootdodge work like a charm in this new gameplay style, and the level design and enemy AI are as good as anything from the originals, with "Nothing But the Second Best" being the highlight of the game by far. In fact, I'd daresay "Nothing But the Second Best" is the highlight of the trilogy as a whole, which is saying a lot considering the originals also have some truly fantastic levels.
And honestly... Though his character arc is pretty bad, Max himself is honestly top form when he's not moping about whilst talking about how drunk he is. His snarks and lines are some real "Friggin' Zombie Demons from Outer Space" stuff.
So yeah. On this revisit, despite still thinking that the plot and writing stink, I actually find myself letting go of my old grudge against this game. It's a fun, well-made and endearing game that has the misfortunes of a toxic discourse surrounding it and being a B-team sequel made by people who loved the original coming after the two best third person shooters of all time. And hey! At least it's better than that OTHER B-team threequel to a popular bullet-time shooter... The one that sold out its franchise for Co-Op Military Shooter trend chasing whilst ending its series on a lacklustre note.

Anytime, Pal. If anything, my main problem with the game, barring the obvious flaws with it, is the discourse surrounding it. On the one hand, you have one faction made up of Remedy elitists who hate change. On the other hand, you have another made up of especially obsessed fans of MP3 who are ready to insult anyone for expressing a different opinion, even if its reasonable. And so, when they get together... Bad stuff happens.

It's baffling how a game made to be a gratifying Third Person Shooter could spawn one of the most toxic discourses this side of Star Wars. Oh, well. Game's still a blast, and I'm not joking about feeling it to be the better of the two B-Team threequels to beloved bullet time games from the 2000s in the early 2010s. The other one was F.E.A.R. 3 and that game is a load of crud.

Like recently I’d gotten into this argument with this guy on YouTube where he accused me of not playing any of the games in the trilogy calling me and others “MP3 Fantrolls” basically belittling everyone and anyone who had an even somewhat positive opinion on MP3 yet constantly proclaimed “it’s perfectly fine to like the game”. It’s absolutely bizarre given the way he behaved, I love all three games but the moment I try to explain my opinion on the third game people just get upset although luckily I’ve also talked to some people who didn’t like the game but didn’t get defensive or anything like that and we were able to have normal conversations about things we liked or were excited about like the remakes which was cool but overall it’s just incredibly toxic so I think I’m gonna take a step back from engaging in those conversations cause it just isn’t very fun when it goes unnecessarily sour.

I’ve bought the FEAR series so I definitely need to play them at some point, I’ve sadly lost a bit of interest in the FPS genre due to games like COD but it looks really cool so I’m willing to give these a shot. I’ve heard the other games are bad and the first is the only good one but I still wanna give them a chance and come to my own conclusion. Also I don’t know if you’ve heard but there’s a game that’s basically inspired by FEAR called TREPANG2 which from what little I’ve played is pretty dope so maybe you’ll like it too :D

Yes, I'm NebLleb from Youtube. I wholeheartedly apologise for unwittingly insulting you whenever you showed up in the comments. I didn't know I was adding so much to the toxicity due to my paranoia, but... I guess I am no better than they are, aren't I?

I apologise for going after you repeatedly and indulging in a toxic discourse. I was just so dumb and angry. I still am, TBH, but now that I have replayed the game, I really should've known better. I think this among other experiences I've had taught me that sometimes, if you don't have anything nice to say and your paranoia is getting the better of you... Just say nothing. There are some fights you're better off not picking.
Sorry for indulging in this mess because I was paranoid you were a Max Payne 3 fantroll and didn't pick my battles wisely. I think that people who have played and love all three games to varying degrees can find common ground with eachother. And I didn't know you were one of them until now.

P.S. I still think its legal to bully Redditors Unfortunately. But not people like you who just post there. I mean, the stereotypical political maniac whose criminally insane.

Holy sh*t I was not expecting this M Night Shyamalan twist. (Jokes aside) Firstly, I wanna say if I was ever rude in my comments I do wanna apologise too, it’s never my intention to when responding to comments as I always try to articulate myself as best I can to explain my point of view and whatnot but if I ever gave off that impression with how I acted then I still wanna apologise for it and I’ll try to be wary of how I handle stuff like that next time. Overall thank you for this post again cause to be honest the last thing I was expecting was to find common ground with someone who I was arguing with like a few days ago but it’s cool to see and has given me a new perspective on things so I appreciate it a lot.
