What's the point in offering subtitles,if they're in the same language as the spoken language?
There's a lot of portuguese(?) in this game, I kinda know what they're saying but hoped that the subs feature would be translated subs, but they aren't. What's the point in them? :conwayfacepalm:

The point? Subtitles are usually for the hard of hearing. Why would the foreign dialogue be translated? Max is a foreigner. He doesn't understand their language. DVDs and Blu-rays often don't have translated subs for foreign parts either, for the same reason.

Not only are there subs for hearing impaired, there are echo-subs, flashing random words like "good guys" and "bad joke" at you just in case you misheard and misread the first time! ;)

are you re.tarded or just trolling?

Subtitles are not mainly for audio description. Those types of subs are entirely different. They describe sounds and background noise. The subs in this game are strictly for localisation, only they aren't translated. There are numerous parts of this game that have loads of portugese that could be translated. I can't believe you think DVDs and Blurays don't have translated subs either. You must be a troll. You can't possibly be that f ucking stupid.

I think I know A LOT more about movies and DVDs/BDs than you. I can give you COUNTLESS examples of DVDs and Blu-rays that don't have subs for foreign parts. I watched one a few days ago, Stalag 17, a Billy Wilder picture about WWII POWs. It had scenes of Germans speaking German amongst themselves. Only the English dialogue was subbed. It would have made zero sense to translate the foreign parts. Any Criterion Collection release is the same: A French movie has subs for French dialogue, but if there are scenes with, for example, German or Italian, no subtitles are provided. There should only be English subs if it's a conscious decision by the creators to make the audience understand the dialogue, in which case they're often hard subs (imprinted) anyway. If Rockstar DID sub the Portuegese parts, it would only be right for the text to be Portuegese. English subs would destroy immersion. Max is a foreigner.

You're out because you don't HAVE an argument. Funny.

Regarding English subtitles:
1) While they're not close captions (games rarely have those), I believe they do help the hearing impaired.
2) As a non-native speaker, I can say that having subtitles in the same language as the spoken language is a great help at times.

Regarding the untranslated Portuguese parts, I believe it's mostly done on purpose for immersion. Max doesn't understand anything in Portuguese and neither does the player. And adding the Portuguese subtitles would kind of ruin the effect, I think.

^^^This. I naturally understand Portuguese as it is my native language, and while it's funny to hear them cursing at Max and all, it does break the immersion. Since videogames are supposed to create a immersive and personal experience for the player, it makes sense that they wouldn't translate foreign dialect. They usually translate it in movies, because when it comes to movies, we are mere spectators, we take no actual part in the story. And even then, they tend to do it when they think it's important to the plot and/or when they feel like it could provide more meaning to a given context.

That said, I've been trying to translate Giovanna's taunts during deathmatches and have only managed to get two. Rzor, would you be able to help with some? Just the Portuguese you hear is fine...

I think it's for immersion. Max is a foreigner and doesn't understand the language, and this is part of the setting of his Brazilian experience. I'd like to have the option for translated subtitles but, as an artistic choice, this is also understandable.
