You don't have to use a microphone, there's a button you can push if you prefer.
As for the controls, using the gamepad was fine. But I can't speak for the mouse/keyboard.
I will say the multiplayer was pretty awful. Mainly because there was a lot of lag, that and there was very little people playing. Almost no one in fact. But I don't know how active the PC online community for this game is.
I do think the game is definately worth the current reduced price.
To paraphrase jim sterling, 'it may not innovate, but it follows really well'.
I would say its worth a sale price. I've seen it on sale a few times, and i'm enjoying it.
Edit: sometimes you will go down and need help. And its a 50/50 chance that they come help you, and they don't.
