Never played MP, so I can't tell you how good it works.
simultaneous turns maybe?
But a few players on a normal sized map, turns are very fast. The turns are NOT simultaneous, which in my opinion is a good thing. Simultaneous turns in Civ 5 make multiplayer combat a total joke, since it is just a race to whoever can click the fastest as soon as a turn starts. Warlock does not need simultaneous turns, since individual turns can be completed in less than a minute or two for the good majority of the game.
All that being said, the downside is you probably aren't going to be able to play multiplayer whenever you want. I've never seen anyone in the lobby since the first multiplayer patch. But if you have some friends, that alleviates that problem. Also, you can find people to play against in the steam forum/group as well as the official forums.
In short: Is multiplayer any good? Yes, it kicks ass. If you have any friends, get them to buy the game for 50% off right now. If they are hesitant, tell them to play the demo. Done and done.
