They're not the same at all, well the gameplay is similar but that's like saying all CoD games are the same... oh wait...
Legend - Has less content than AP and CW but it is unique story so if you want to go for the story play that, bear in mind these games are very long 50+ hours even if you rush it so if you're going for story you have to spend a lot of time.
Armored Princess - Better than Legend in my opinion, more content and better gameplay
Crossworlds - ARMORED PRINCESS WITH ENHANCED FEATURES... CW is the same game but with added content and other features, the main campaign is the same with added content.
Warrior of the north - I don't know i haven't played it, but it is completely new campaign so might be worth it.
Personally i would just buy Platinum edition (you get Legend for free basically) and maybe WotN, can't recommend it though since i haven't played it yet. CW has the best gameplay out of those three, trust me you don't have the time to play through all of them, so it's worth it just to play the best one, if you really want to know something about story which isn't that great in my opinion, certainly not why i played these games... then just read it from the internet or something.
CW is expansion to AP so it's the same game with more content and gameplay features. Legend is worse game but it has its own campaign so if you really want to play it then go ahead but i wouldn't recommend it if you value your time lol.
EDIT: I wonder if CW is stand-alone actually... it doesn't say anything on steam store page about you needing AP so i guess it is. If that's the case AP is useless and also for some reason more expensive... that makes no sense it's worse than CW, CW is AP but better.
Hmm interesting... When i bought CW i needed AP that's for sure. I think you need GOTY edition or something otherwise you need to have AP n order to play CW even though Steam doesn't say so until you try to purchase CW i guess? At least according to that thread.
According to http://www.1cpublishing.eu/game/king-s-bounty-crossworlds/overview
You need AP though, so unless Steam has some kind of special version you need to have AP in order to play CW.
Seems to be that way this GOTY edition sure made things confusing...

Why can't it just say AP+CW since that's what you're getting...
Anyway If you do need AP to play CW then buying Platinum edition is the best option obviously since you basically get Legend for free if you buy it, no reason to buy CW and AP individually.
Sorry i thought they made it standalone later after the game was released, i bought the game immediately when it came out, it wasn't standalone back then though.
A lot of confusion here... it says nowhere on steam store page that you need AP... sure it says it's an expansion but have you ever heard of STANDALONE EXPANSION Valve?
1. Progress in The Legend story-driven, while it's possible to reach almost every island in Crossworlds before you finish a single quest (assuming you're REALLY good at kiting). The Legend is actually harder most of the time as a result.
2. Crossworlds has a LOT more things to grind because it adds 15 medals with 3 levels each, and they give you bonuses in-game. The most notable one is the "win X fights without losses" medal, which gives 300/500/1000 leadership, but several others are extremely useful. If you like having extra goals, this is good. If you don't like approaching fights with the intention of doing a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with winning them, this is not good at all.
3. The Legend favors magic-users, and totally shafts Paladins - it's the only game of the series that does not completely tie leadership gains to your class. Crossworlds favors Warriors, and magic users have the hardest time on Impossible.
4. Crossworlds has more item choices, more creatures, and a LOT more creature abilities. This may be a downside for some people because incomplete sets are a lot more common in my experience in Crossworlds, and sometimes you can't find enough of the creature types you really want to field. This can be glaring in the "not enough archer units for my Elf army" and "I have enough Dwarves to fill 10 armies but can't find enough Demons to fill 1" sense.
5. While both games have mods, the mods in The Legend often focus more on gameplay aspects and sometimes difficulty. The best mods in Crossworlds add items, creatures, and will crank up the difficulty to sometimes absurd levels.
You DO NOT need Armored Princess for Crossworlds. I advise against Warriors of the North because it's still somewhat bug-ridden and your choice of units is heavily restricted for far too long in that game. Don't get me wrong, I think that game has some excellent improvements, including making all 3 classes useful and more balanced in strength than previous releases. It's just far, far worse from a quality control perspective.
The Legend is still the largest game (I'm only a few islands into WotN, so I guess it could be bigger). Unfortunately, it also has some show-stopping bugs. I've put countless hours into the game, but never been able to finish the main questline because there's always some bug that causes the game to crash and corrupt the save. The Legend also lacks a lot of small niceties - it doesn't have a favorites menu for the spell book, weak enemies don't flee like they do in later games, etc.
Ultimately, the games are all pretty much the same. If they were all the same price, I'd probably go for AP in some incarnation. The arena battles in the AP expansions are really great, as well. I'm not very far into WotN yet, but so far I haven't seen anything that makes it seem worth the premium.
