As for why you want it is up to you. Yes it will add new units, a whole new map to explore which also includes new quests, new items, a new "rank" mechanic, blah blah blah, typical dlc stuff, but none of which is required for enjoyment. If it's any consolation, the extra stuff adds about 10 to 20 hours of content, which for the most part was unnecessary because the main content was long enough. In addition to all that comes with bugs and crashes. FYI, most of the new ice units are just average and you don't get to use them until middle of the game. The dead lizardmen could prove useful but only if you know how to use them.
Should you play it? I guess... if you really want the extra content. The main game without the dlc is a bit easier because you get your wings extremely early. The dlc postponed getting your wings until very late in the game and that is the reason why you can't transfer your save file over.
And as you can tell, my opinion of this dlc is meh because I came into disappointment with the main game itself with or without dlc and so the dlc only made it worse.
The rage skills were a big disappointment and the enemy army composition AND unit amount even on impossible difficulty were a joke. Many were bland unit compositions and they were too small that even a mage without having to use magic could take them out easily without loses. The bosses are a big disappointment, some liked the final battle, i thought it was one of the worse and weakest in the series and a total joke just like the previous boss fight before the final. Anyway, end rant, that's my opinion, judge for yourself.
My verdict - Vanilla game ; 7 out of 10.
With the DLC - 8 out of 10.
But yes, you have to start over with it.
