Agree with Heroes 5 as a decent alternative.
I really hope it has achivements :)
Still, I do recommend getting this game if only for the tactical combat. The gameplay has some things in common with the King's Bounty series (party size, movements on the map, chests) but there are enough differences to make it enjoyable without ever feeling like you're playing a KB clone.
Last but not least there are several different ways of playing the game. You can choose to respond to NPCs and quests as a zealot and a fanatic or opt for a more open minded approach and the game will take your choices into account.
You can also check Age of Wonders 3 - the battles are great but there is also a bit of new gameplay elements that are not present in KB series - like city management, lots of "castle" battles and every map has a similar goal - defeat the enemy/enemies. King's Bounty has a great sense of exploration of new lands/isles/dungeons, etc.
I hope that helps...
