It seems better to just use a paladin instead. You get a lot of very useful auras and resistances, as well as the ability to deal non-physical damage and heal a bit. And you still get all the actually useful blocking and shield bashing skills. Between shield weaponry and Force of Good (add % of willpower to physical & magical attack) a high-willpower paladin can actually deal pretty good single-target damage as well as boost the party.
Thank you. I think ill try making him a paladin as he is becoming extremely underwhelming at my current point in the game. Though i do still feel like we need a master level tank class other than dragon knight.
You can generally get Guardian a lot earlier than Paladin. In a way, Paladin and Arcane Knight are the advanced version of advanced class -- albeit each with their own caveats: Paladin doesn't shine until you have later items and levels to use and customize large aoe aura. And it's also difficult to get a front line character to have the heal early on.
If you don't have a stellar lineup, early on, Guardian's own high block, aoe dodge, and camp skill could be how you get through story quests, especially in higher difficulty settings. You don't get the aoe dodge or Battle Plan with Paladin. A Guardian with Mana Core is quite fun to strategize around in that case.
Yeah, that's true. I was talking about the period in which the master classes become available.
I don't actually bother much with normal paladin healing. A bishop/saint is just so much better.
The big advantage there (besides the priest damage reduction and anti-undead/demon damage boost) is that you can get Restore on the paladin for a single skillpoint and no investment in any of the "improved healing" skills. With a paladin's high willpower, you can use that skill without too much trouble and it is a great panic button.
Battle Plan is great, but (dragon) Knights also get it and are generally more useful.
It also tends not to work in story battles, as you cannot rest in most of those. But against the Bandit King and the like it's indeed a must-have.
So maybe:
Dark Knight (uses dark, tanking) (paladin upgrade)
Moon Blade (uses holy and dark sword skills) (arcane knight upgrade)
