RPG that not souls like? Skyrim, The Witcher, Final Fantasy, and many more.
People knew which is RPG, which is Souls like
FromSoftware didn't invent anythings, they only made their game like many older action RPG. The gameplay of their game is old enouth for the 1st soul to barely have been recognized at it's release, because of how many similar game with better story they were.
Seriously no one call all the RTS C&C like, nor do anyone call RPG Dongeon and Dragon like. what's up with people playing soul game and then thinking that the world is limited to this.
It feel like reading all these kid year ago that were spaming that every game copied Minecraft.
I mean, Souls-like is a term that people made in Steam to identified a dark fantasy game that is overly difficult which From Software Souls game popularized, which are niche back then but now mainstream enough with Elden Ring and produced lots of copy cat but failed to understand what makes Souls game special.
Elden Ring is still an RPG, sure, but what separates it from the other RPG is the no option to choose difficulty and being hard in the first place.
And this game, Estencel, is honestly a souls-like game.
Any examples of these old games that were "soulslike" before that term was a thing?
A soulslike game is more about:
- enemy design where intro enemies are easy to outmaneuver, but just as lethal as late game enemies who have more tricks
- intricate level design that features branching paths that all loop back together, often with shortcuts given as reward
- a limited healing system that can (usually) only be replenished at a checkpoint or through combat
- checkpoints cause non-boss enemies to be respawned
- a currency system that is used to buy both items and player enhancement that is lost on death (but often recoverable)
- combat that is a mixture of enemy reads, precise inputs for attacks and parries, and navigating the space around the encounter
- a dark, depressing story about the end of life/fall of humanity/remnants of the world
Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Salt and Sanctuary, Hollow Knight, Death's Door, Nioh; all of these meet all of the above criteria. Soulslike doesn't mean "third person RPG with action combat", it means the game world is cruel and unforgiving but can be overcome with perseverance, patience and skill.
Gonna put this as an answer.
Basicaly any open world do this, and Soul game are made inside "dugeon" like world, and dungeon already had this kind of things in tabletop RPG.
This is still not news, many game had limited healing system that could only be resplenished with specific action like sleeping or going into town to buy them.
Enemy that respawn only when you sleep or go back to the place you can save is also not somethings news. It was extremely common for game before auto-save was a common thing.
The only original things is that you lose the currency when you die.
DMC, any fighting game, and even good RPG and FPS have this. It's simply called a well made game design.
You discovered Dark Fantasy, well done but this is not news.
Just play any good game made in the early 2000 and you'll see the thing you talked about. There is a reason why Demon Soul barely had any succes at it's release, it was not original so people played game with more well crafter gameplay and story.
