Game does not run properly on Linux (or, more specifically, Steam Deck)
I am one of the few people who like this game, so when I got the error saying I needed to have Java, I looked up solutions. I found a replacement launcher that is meant to get rid of the Java dependency, but I do not know how to install it properly. I would appreciate any sort of video guide with this.

Launcher in question: https://github.com/darealshinji/sonic-4-launcher/releases/tag/r4

You are probably downloadin the source code instead of compiled launchers from the same release page.
Go here: https://github.com/darealshinji/sonic-4-launcher/releases/latest
And click either "sonic-4-launcher_r4_gcc.zip" or "sonic-4-launcher_r4_msvc.zip", that's the thing you need.

To specifically state my confusion, there is no "Soniclauncher.exe" in the replacement launcher files, so when I am told to replace the one that is already there using Java, I do not know how.

You should download the arhive that ends with either "gcc.zip" or "msvc.zip", it contains the "SonicLauncher.exe" that you have to put in the game folder.

Thanks very much for your reply. However, when I look at the github and all versions of the launcher, they all end with "SonicLauncher.vcxproj" and nowhere in all 4 versions of the launcher do I see gcc.zip or msvc.zip. Am I missing something obvious?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Thanks a million! For future people, what I did was download the msvc variant, and used the Proton 6 compatibility to make the game run. Inputs within the game are still an issue, but now it is running as it should.

Again for future viewers, I used the community controller settings titled "Sonic 4 Episode 1 Keyboard Emulation Re-Upload". Works like a charm.
